About the Author

Ben S. Branch is Professor of Finance at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, where he has taught finance, investment, banking, and industrial organization for over 30 years. He was previously on the faculty at Dartmouth College, the University of Michigan, and the University of Texas, and has served on the boards of several corporations, including the First Republic Bank, BankEast, Bank of New England, and Proactive Technologies. An outstanding book on investing that stands out from the crowd

I've been on a quest for the last 3 years or so to educate myself on the area of investing (I have a Ph.D. in mechanical engineering and develop commercial software development for a living, but prior to a few years ago, I knew almost nothing about investing and finance). Over the last three years or so, I've read some 47 books in the area of investing and finance, and this book is one of the very best of the entire lot; it really stands out. Prof. Branch's book covers numerous topics that none of these other books cover, such as the nuts and bolts of bidding, the practical use of options and margin accounts, etc. It has a lot of extremely practical information that for some reason is not even mentioned or discussed in other books. It's really an outstanding book, and now I'm hoping that now I can put the knowledge I gained from the book to good use. [...]good this book is and how much it stood out from the other investing books I've read.

Wonderful Beginners Rhyming Dictionary

With over 15,000 words, it has enough for an aspiring poet to be very useful without overwhelming a reader. Although more advanced poets should turn to Sue K. Young's other rhyming dictionary, The New Comprehensive American Rhyming Dictionary, it is perfect in a classroom. I originally bought this book from my 7th grade literature teacher and immediately found good use. For the past five years, it has been of great convenience and has been one of the books I keep at the side of my desk.
When writing a poem for school assignments or merely to express my own emotional state, or convey a story, it has definitely come in handy. Although I am currently looking for a new, more comprehensive rhyming dictionary, this book is great for beginners.

A more useful reference book than you'd imagine...

Wow! I was really surprised with the quality of this book - It is a very well organized book of rhyming words, which is a handy thing to have around! The rhyming words are listed alphabetically by number of syllables. I bought 3 of these for friends of mine who are going into University journalism courses, and they were thrilled. These things aren't just for "ages eight and up" as it states on the back; everyone can have fun with a rhyming dictionary!

It's also really fun to just read the rhyming words out loud quickly in front of a group of people. It's an excellent "coffee-table book" in that sense! More fun than a barrel of monkeys!

Awesome read

This was a book I was assigned for my Intro to Cultural Geography class and when I bought it I was upset because I hate spending money on things I don't think I need. Little did I know, I was going to love this book. After reading the first chapter I looked forward to the assigned readings and would even read ahead because it kept me so intrigued. The author was able to fit more than enough information in about so many different topics and she did it in a way that didn't seem jumbled or confusing. Each chapter is laid out beautifully and expresses exactly what the title says it is going to be. In a book that covers so many topics one would expect maybe a slight bias, this book has none. Overall I am very pleased with the book and glad I actually read it instead of letting it sit on the shelf like I have done with other textbooks. The book is well worth the money and I definietly recommend it even if you aren't taking a geography course. Last but certainly not least is the fact that the author is an Associate Professor at Oklahoma State University! Go Pokes!!!

As a faculty member who uses this book in her PR Writing course, I can say that it is one of the best books around.

In plain English, it tells you what brochures, press release, VNRs, and media kits are.

About the Author
Alexander Kent, pen name of Douglas Edward Reeman, joined the British Navy at 16, serving on destroyers and small craft during World War II, and eventually rising to the rank of lieutenant. He has taught navigation to yachtsmen and has served as a script adviser for television and films. His books have been translated into nearly two dozen languages.

21 books into series and getting a little repetitive but still an interesting period. Approaching 100 books in this genre and may be starting to tire....

Lost at sea

The Richard Bolitho novels have always featured stirring naval battle scenes, with wooden heroes, terrible romatic relationships, and unbelievable activity. Now comes this, the 21st in the series and it is apparent that Alexander Kent has mostly lost his way.

First of all, Richard Bolitho starts out this book as a Vice Admiral and gets promoted to a full Admiral. Every naval service I have ever heard of makes a big deal out of such an important promotion with ceremonies, pomp and circumstance, and lots of flashes of martial ardor. In this book, Bolitho is promoted and merely goes on his way - the one part of this book where I burst out laughing is when his lover finds out and he stammers that he forgot to mention it - yeah. Right!

The vast majority of this book (as has been the case in the last several) is Kent's attempt to become a more competent writer in telling about people's emotional and romantic sides. In this book he does a better than average job of detailing the romance between Bolitho and Lady Catherine, and he also takes good care of the love between Allday and Unis. His descriptions of how they each deal with the separations enforced on them is realistic. However, he has obviously not thought through the relationship between Adam Bolitho and Zenoria and his manner of resolving this time bomb is way to pat.

Kent is also showing a better grasp of what makes Richard Bolitho such a leader. Compare this book to the early ones where we were told of the hero-worship engendered, but given no reason for it. In this book we see him caring for his people - some as lowly as the 12 year old boy who was literally cast aside by his family.

On the not so good side, there are many inconsistencies and problems with the plotting. The Adam/Zenoria issue aside, why is it that Bolitho recognizes that there will be war with the United States, manages to cripple two of their super-frigates, and immediately returns to Britain? How come that is possible when we were earlier told that the Admiral who served with Nelson at Trafalgar spent 10 straight years in the mediterranean without setting foot ashore? It seems that when it is convenient, Bolitho returns to England to carry on his love affair. Or, is that his orders were simply to destroy Nathan Beer?

For those who like the naval action in this book, you may not wish to buy it. No one seems to even look at the sea until the book is half through, and even then we only read a quick sketch of Adam's battle, and a slightly longer sketch of the ultimate battle between Bolitho and Beer. And while there are descriptions of the dead, one reasonably important character appears in the book again, is killed, but we have no idea why. An important characater in most of the series who never makes an appearance is Herrick. As a matter of fact, we learn nothing of what has transpired with him at all.

So, overall a mixed bag. I wonder what volume 22 brings?

A Romance Novel for Men

No kidding, this is a romance novel for mature husbands and wives to enjoy. It focuses on the trials of aging love when politics and war eventually force the lovers-Lady Somervell and Admiral Bolitho-apart (but also Adam, Keene, and Allday-familiar series characters-from their loves, too). Why, the story is a real tearjerker in the most honorable sense, and has uncommon psychological depth. What it doesn't have is much naval action-Bolitho doesn't even put to sea until half way through. He then experiences the wrenching responsibility of conscientious command, a theme of this series and especially in these later books. The title of this story has special meaning of a "just war" to Bolitho, but also to Kent's many American readers, for this is a story from late in the Napoleonic world war when a young America took up arms against the ruler of the seas. It is a story particularly instructive for Americans because it exposes the internal rifts and conflicts of conscience within the ranks of the faceless British in the War of 1812.
A hallmark of Kent's style is the smooth transition between the thoughts of one character and another, a style of presenting multiple viewpoints not even attempted by most authors. While Kent is "second-rate," I don't agree with another reviewer that Parkinson is one of the best: his prose is wooden and his sailors seem to end up doing a lot of land soldiering.
