In August 1863, during Kit Carson's roundup of the Navajo, Santa Fe's Provost Marshal, Major Joseph Cummings, is found dead in an arroyo near what is now the Hubbell Trading Post in Ganado, Arizona. The murder, as well as the roughly million of today's dollars in cash and belongings in his saddlebags, is historically factual. Carson's explanation that he was shot by a lone Indian, which, even today, can be found in the U.S. Army Archives, is implausible. Who did kill Carson's ''brave and lamented'' Major? The answer is revealed in this tale of a group of con artists operating in 1861-1863 in the New Mexico and Arizona Territories. As a matter of historical fact, millions of today's dollars were embezzled from the Army, the Church, and the New Mexico Territory during this time. In this fictionalized version, the group includes the aide de camp of the Territories' Commanding General of the Union Army, a poker dealer with a checkered past in love with one of her co-conspirators, and the Provost Marshal of Santa Fe. It is an epic tale of murder and mystery, of staggering thefts, of love and deceit. Both a Western and a Civil War novel, this murder mystery occurs in and among Cochise's Chiricahua Apache Wars, the Navajo depredations and wars, Indian Agent Kit Carson's return to action from retirement, and the Civil War. The story follows the con artists, some historical, some fictional, during their poker games, scams, love affairs, and bank robberies, right into that arroyo deep in the heart of Navajo country.
This novel was a winner of The 2014 National Indie Excellence Book Award.

On the death of Joseph Cummings, who was provost marshal of Santa Fe and a major in the Union army, Kit Carson noted that the victim was shot thro’ the abdomen by a concealed Indian. Cummings had about $5,000 on his person—a great deal of money in 1863. From these facts, Kohlhagen extrapolates a sort of murder mystery, revolving around a cast of frontier con artists who come together with various schemes to defraud the army. The army is vulnerable, hard-pressed as it is with discontented Apaches, Utes, and especially Navajos, while at the same time fighting off General Henry Sibley’s Texans in the Confederacy’s westernmost incursion. The con artists are tedious, inscrutable, and curiously contemporary, and the historical role of Cummings at best seems minor. But the battles at Valverde and Glorieta Pass are accurate and well staged, and Kohlhagen delivers full, intriguing portraits of both Kit Carson and Cochise. Carson, in particular, is compelling as a good man caught up in bad endeavors such as the long walk of the Navajos to Bosque Redondo. --John Mort

A fantastic re-telling of historic events
By Roxy Kade
I have always loved Westerns, and I used to love watching North and South when I was little, so this book was a really exciting read for me. The history of this era has always fascinated me.
Kohlhagen's mix of fact and fiction made the story come alive, making me feel like I was right alongside these amazing historical figures who shaped the future on the United States. My knowledge of the Civil War is not vast, and war is always ugly, but my gosh, the thousands of lives lost within a two year span was just devastating. It seemed like everyone in that time was out to kill someone, and what made it worse was that a lot of the people involved knew each other personally at one time or another, yet they acted like strangers in the face of war.
There were many amazing characters within the pages of this story, and they each had their own battle, or two, to fight, but I never once felt overwhelmed or lost with everything that was going on. I have to say that out of all the characters, Lily was my favorite. She was feisty and knew how to hustle just about everyone around her. She played a great game with those she was in cahoots with, but I also had to admire her loyalty to Damours. She didn't necessarily give a damn about being loyal in a physical sense, but her heart was in the right place, and she was always looking out for him, even when she could have easily kicked him to the curb.
Cummings, for me, was the most loathsome character. He gave me a bad vibe off the bat and my dislike for him grew right to the end of the story. He was spineless, deceitful and a little creepy.
This book is an action-packed, murder mystery adventure, and at times a little chaotic (and I mean that in a good way).
Kohlhagen has masterfully captured history, adding his own twist on factual events, and readers will be totally enthralled.

Don't just bury this book on the shelf: Read It!
By RichTNYC
I am NOT a fan of historical novels. But a friend recommended this book and I gave it a try anyway. What a great story! The writing had me hooked from page one, and it just moved along great from then on. It was a completely different perspective on the Civil War than I had ever been exposed to before, which always centered on battles and torn families further East.
As I read the book it appeared to be several fictional characters doing their own thing (a scam) in the middle of a bunch of actual people from that time and place for historical perspective. So I was blown away at the end to discover the people I *thought* were made up were actually real, and really there then. And the fictional scam? Based on the mysterious evidence at the scene of the crime, it may actually have all been true after all. Making this not just a historical novel, but a neat piece of detective work on a case that's been cold for 150 years! The author's done a great job making dry detective work so enjoyable to read as a story.
Whenever I watch a movie "based on a true story" I always wonder at the end which parts are true and which made up. I loved the fact that this book tells you everything about that right after the final scene, down to the smallest detail: informative, interesting, and quite surprising.
All in all, a rollicking good read that's educational as well. Like my friend, I highly recommend it.

If History Class was this Interesting, I'd be Smart!
By BobK
Now living in New Mexico, the history of this place has been cloudy but interesting. With three, main ethnic groups represented here, history takes on the tone of the person speaking, either Hispanic, Native American or Anglo.
Knowing nothing about Steven Kohlhagen's book, I saw a copy and knew it was important.
Turns out, it was.
Thanks to this most enjoyable depiction of events affecting the Southwest around the time of the Civil War, I have a new understanding of how the Native people were treated, cheated and tricked. I also understand what people mean when they say, "Oh yes, there was a Civil War battle fought here." And, most important of all, I know why everything in Taos carries the name of Kit Carson in one form or other. Better yet, thanks to "Where They Bury You", I see why people have so many different opinions of that man.
Kohlhagen has a gift for putting facts into a readable, believable narrative form while making the characters real enough so their motivations, lives and deaths make sense. I also appreciate his complete honesty about who was straight from history and who needed to be created to fill in the gaps.
This, in my opinion, is a masterful piece of literature and a very enjoyable read.
