This book is a must if you are a fan of the small American style steam launches. It is jam packed with information, photos, and blueprints.

Long out of print, they come up available once in a while. Strike while the iron is hot, as they say! ;)

About the Author

Jacques J.F. Commandeur is Senior Researcher at the SWOV Institute for Road Safety Research, Leidschendam, The Netherlands. His Ph.D. is from the Department of Psychometrics and Research Methodology of Leiden University. Between 1991 and 2000 he did research for the Department of Data Theory and the Department of Educational Sciences at Leiden University in the fields of multidimensional scaling and nonlinear multivariate data analysis. Since 2000 he has been at SWOV researching the statistical and methodological aspects of road safety research in general, and time series analysis of developments in road safety in particular.

His research interests are Procrustes analysis; Multidimensional scaling; Distance-based multivariate analysis; Statistical analysis of time series; Forecasting. He has published in international journals in psychometrics and chemometrics. Siem Jan Koopman is Professor of Econometrics at the Free University Amsterdam and the Tinbergen Institute. His Ph.D. is from the London School of Economics (LSE) and he has held positions at the LSE between 1992 and 1997 and at the CentER (Tilburg University) between 1997 and 1999. In 2002 he visited the US Bureau of the Census in Washington DC as an ASA / NSF / US Census / BLS Research Fellow.

His research interests are Statistical analysis of time series; Theoretical and applied time series econometrics; Financial econometrics; Simulation methods; Kalman filtering and smoothing; Forecasting. He has published in many international journals in statistics and econometrics.

A good starting place

I purchased this book based on the recommendations of the previous two reviewers. I was disappointed at first but quickly became pleased. The book is thankfully short (160 pages) and provides a good introduction as to exactly what state space modeling is.

This book should only be purchased as an introduction to state space time series modeling as much detail is missing.

Readers should expect chapters 1-7 will present exemplar scenarios (e.g. economics data driven by an "explanatory variable" like inflation, or ones driven by an explanatory variable with an interference variable (such as the introduction of new tax levels)). The author provides examples of these models throughout the first few chapters - along with a simple mathematical model.

In Chapter 8 and on, the author introduces the state space method of modeling the previously demonstrated scenarios. He takes each of their mathematical models and shows how they can be represented in state-space form (i.e. matrix form).

The book concludes with a "how to" on using software modeling tools to model time-series data. Not much detail/intuition is given as to the nitty gritty of how a state space model can be rectified with the data to be modeled (as the author seems to think the reader will be satisfied with the software package "how to").

I feel empowered to carry on in my exploration of this topic with thicker, more advanced books.

Great for the technical non-specialist.

I found this book extremely helpful and I highly recommend it. I am a technical person, but in a different area (optimization). I have been trying to learn about forecasting, and particularly state space methods. I have read the classics: Harvey (1989) and Durbin and Koopman (2002) and they are great, but they leave out all the practical stuff. Why are we doing this? What will the results look like? How do we actually initialize the process? Nothing but equations and more equations for more and more obscure mathematical variations. How do we actually use this stuff? That is where Commandeur & Koopman is invaluable. The STAMP and SsfPack computer programs are used as a kind of "Deus ex Machina", so you have to know about the Kalman filtering and BFGS that is going on behind the curtain. But if you get the math but are confused about how to apply it, then this is the book for you.

Not Impressed At all

First of all, I think some of the rituals and such in this book borders on some creepy stuff. I had heard alot of stuff about Frost tradition wicca, and I just thought that it was wrong, plain and simple.
For example, when a young girl becomes of age and is ready to be initiated, she is ritually deflowered? UGH. All the talk about phalluses made me queasy.
And the handfasting ceremonies in this deal with the bride and groom cutting themselves and then mixing their blood? Sounds just downright DANGEROUS to me.
I don't practice fluffy bunny stuff by a LONG shot, but I want nothing to do with these wierd and creepy rituals. JMO

The Book That Offends Wiccans and Christians Alike! BUY IT!

Before the fluffy bunny wicca of Silver Ravenpoof, there was WICCA. REAL WICCA, with hair growing out of it! The Frosts were the pioneers of wicca in America, peddling their "Magic Power of Witchcraft" book in comic books with ads for Sea Monkeys. If you wanted to study wicca back in the 1970's, you went to the Frosts books or mail order school. There really wasn't much else out there. This whole idea of the Frost's Wicca being an "abberation" is ludicrous. For a while, it WAS WICCA, period. The publisher of TWB went bankrupt shortly after its publication (who says Witchcraft isn't bad luck?), and it has been re-published and retitled as "The Good Witch's Bible", which only makes the book's title ironic when you read it.
OK, now I'll let the book speak for itself. I'm quoting from the new edition. Page 73 (a description of a wedding ritual) :
The woman cuts the man's forearm so that she draws blood. (The easiest way to produce the necessary cut is to pinch the flesh with one hand and cut with the other.) ... Man and woman each cut themselves; the man allows his blood to fall on hers.
[If all the sex doesn't give you AIDS, that one ritual should]
Page 159 says:
"It is inherent in Wicca belief that marriage is mainly a matter of the mind, not of sex. Can you allow the woman you live with to have sex with another in the perfect faith that she will return to you and you will feel more, not less, loving toward her? This tenet is obviously the reverse of the Judeo-Christian [sic] 'thou shalt not.'...our rule is that twice a year every male and female in the coven will live with a female or male other than the spouse for one full lunar month. It is usual for the males to change homes, though in many cases, if more convenient, the women agree to change."
[So, wife swapping is part of Wicca, even if they don't call it this! ]
Page 66 "The physical attributes of male and female virginity are destroyed at the youngest possible age, either by the mother or by a doctor. In the female case, the hymen is painlessly broken surgically. In the male case, the mother makes absolutely sure that the foreskin can be drawn fully back by cutting the underside attachment membrane"
[But even more twisted are the following instructions on how to deflower a girl who wasn't born into Wicca. It is done at menstration, which happens around age 11 or 12.]
Page 66:"At the last sabbat or eshbat before the initiation, the female novice is given the sacred phallus and the instruction sheet in Table 5 so that she can learn to insert and remove the phallus quickly and comfortably. She is also taught how she should lie and what she should do during the initiation ceremony...Throughout the fast the female novice wears her phallus, and at some time during the fast the novices are given a demonstration of introitus by a couple selected by the coven. The novice makes her own decision on contraception or lack of it. If she needs advice or help, the sponsor is the one to give it. (The IUD is the recommended Wicca preventive.)"
[So little girls get a live demonstration by an adult couple on how to use a dildo! And why do underage girls need contraceptives if no one is having sex with them?]
Table 5 are the instructions to be given for the deflowering pubescent Wiccan girls: "You have been entrusted with two phalli; these are in our care until your initiation. We would like you to be initiated at the next coven meeting, which will take place on ... This means that, excluding your menstruation time, you have three weeks to prepare your muscles for introitus. Your father or your sponsor will help you if you have any difficulties or pain."
[On page 99 are the instructions for making the dildo! So a father raping his daughter with a didlo is part of Wicca!Suddenly stories about Satanic Ritual Abuse aren't so far fetched, huh?]
There's really a lot more I could have mentioned. It's practically impossible to open this book to any page and find something that won't offend somebody! There is racist stuff about black people being better at Wicca because they talk to spirits, Asians are better too, while whites are slow, so covens should be segregated at least at first. Christ got his powers by gay oral sex. The family unit is to be disolved and replaced by the coven. Kids are to spend once a month with a different family (for God only knows what!). Kids are to learn everything about sex at the earliest possible age with nothing held back, "no bird or bees". This is so Wiccan kids won't be raised like Christian kids who are raised as "repressed perverts" as the author puts it! Yes, it is one of the vilest books ever written! PLEASE, SOMEBODY BUY COPIES FOR BOB LARSON AND RUSH LIMBAUGH! LOL! It's been in print in some form or another for 30 years. Somebody out there must be doing these crazy things! BUY THIS BOOK AND GIVE A DOSE OF REALITY TO THAT WICCA CURIOUS TEEN! BUY IT FOR YOUR MINISTER, YOUR LOCAL CHIEF OF POLICE, THE DEPARTMENT OF CHILD AND FAMILY SERVICES! The possibilites are endless! Buy the new edition for $10, don't be an idiot and spend $166 for the old one. If you do, you are an even bigger idiot than the average occult geek.

About the Author

Charles E. Hurst grew up on the ethnic south-side of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and his experiences there fostered a life-long interest in social inequality and social theory.  He earned his Bachelor of Science and Masters of Science degrees from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, and later his Ph.D. from the University of Connecticut.  He retired in 2008 as Professor of Sociology from The College of Wooster, after having taught courses on inequality in America and social theory for over 40 years.  His research resulted in articles on class consciousness, status inconsistency, and socioeconomic status and health care, and most recently, Amish society.  His books include The Anatomy of Social Inequality (C. V. Mosby 1979), Living Theory:  The Application of Classical Social Theory to Contemporary Life, 2nd edition (Allyn & Bacon 2005), and Social Inequality:  Forms, Causes and Consequences, 7th edition (Allyn & Bacon 2010).  During the last several years, his interest in social inequality led him to conduct research on issues related to women’s status, wealth, and class distinctions within the Ohio Amish community.  With a colleague, he has completed the first in-depth study of this settlement, soon to be published by Johns Hopkins University Press as An Amish Paradox:  Diversity and Change in the World’s Largest Amish Community.

2003 Inequality in the USA is an outrage

I think most U.S. citizens don't realize just how extensive inequality is in the world and in the U.S. Hurst does an amazing job of explaining this differential. In chapter eight he quotes the United Nations Human Development Report on worldwide inequality: "In 1997 it was estimated that the total wealth of the richest 225 people in the world was over $1 trillion, which equaled the combined income of the poorest 47 percent [of the world] (2.5 billion people)" (page 161).
He provides stunning at-home statistics as well. All well documented. All seemingly credible (U.S. Bureau of the Census).
He breaks social inequality along many dimensions, explains the general explanations for such inequality, shows the consequences of it, and explains how some have dealt with these perceived injustices in the past.
I think Charles Hurst's text stands as the backbone of any program that would truly work to change the status quo of the injustices of tremendous inequalities of all kinds.
Outrage was my reaction to the extensive detail this text brings to life. Be warned, if you open this book you won't like the picture of our world that it paints.

Dynamic Psychiatry Introductory Text

I was fortunate to receive a review copy of Psychiatry and have been reading it like a novel ever since. It is indeed "dynamic" making a dynamic understanding of the patient central to the clinician's assessment and evaluation. For trainees, and practitioners needing a refresher or introduction to the dynamic aspects of illness, this text is a treat. In this era of patient-centered care, wellness and recovery, Psychiatry offers hope that our field can embrace these principles and still be cutting edge.

Lovely Book! This was a perfect sequel to Twin Souls and I truly hope we will get to read a third book about Alex and Salem. There is a lot going on in this book aswell just like in Twin Souls but in this one I think it's more action. And I must say OMG to all of the crazy, sad and confusing things that Alex have to endure in this book. I would crumble instantly if I was her, gladly i'm not her lol. The only thing I do envy is her relaionship with Salem. He is so loving and understanding all of the time and Alex is everything to him. Alex relationship to her father Paul is kind of strained and weird at times, especially to the end of the story. Not to spoil anything but I really loved the turn Hybrid took towards the end of the book and it will be something to spin on in the third book (fingers crossed for that).

The story is so well written and you can really picture everything in your mind which I love!
Thanks to K.A. Poe for writing such a great story!

Love'd it!

Just as wonderful as the first, and I have a great intent to read them both again well I await the next. I found the book had a lot of unforeseen twist and turns that I found not only well thought out, but kept me anticipating the next page that much more. Amazing job K.A. Poe, you've written another amazing book!!

Beyond any fiction book out there

I have NEVER cried while reading a fictional story. EVER. This story made me cry a little. It wasnt becase it was especially sad it was just extremely powerful. The emotion that the author puts in the book is so raw and real... and...and magical that it will touch you deeply and have you doing what I did. When you read the last word you will roll off the couch and throw your Kindle while saying Holy Turd Holy Turd. Then you will start rolling across the living room carpet saying why why is it over and then you will come to the realization that THERES A THIRD BOOK!!!!!! You must read this book even if I think that it shouldnt be physically and morally possible to have so much action and awesomness in one single book.

Centered on what started off as a small mining camp in West Virginia, the book is an interesting study on the history of the United States and the mining industry, particularly since it had such a major influence and drastic changes over the years. Weaving through the story, the reader can see the progress that occurred throughout the years; with the interesting twist that progress did not always have positive effects. As the years pass on and technology increases, we see the eventual decline of the town that the reader and her family so loved.
It's hard to read this book and not sense the love and passion that was put into its pages by the author. The book memorializes a family history while educating the reader about what life was really like in those times. The writing style makes the book an easy read and gives readers insight into a world they can never personally experience. This book portrays life as seen through the eyes of a youngster (Lillian) and her family. Lillian was the youngest of seven children. The book begins generations before the coal camp life and what eventually brought her family to Minden. It tells of the struggles they endured as immigrants, as miners and as coal camp kids, as well as the happiness and pride and joy of providing for family and the life they shared. After college and marriage, Lillian moved from the area. There are no miners among their family today. Most family members have moved for jobs and careers, with only a few remaining in the area. Lillian is now in her sixties. She lives with her family in the foothills of the beautiful Bull Run Mountains in Virginia. She has worked forty-plus years in the private industry, real estate, and the security industry. This writing was a challenge and new endeavor for Lillian as well as one of passion.

A Walk Through Minden: In the Lives of the Crone and Vegh Families transports the reader back in time as it followed the Crone and Vegh families when they came to America and settled in as a West Virginian coal mining family. A loving tribute for her family and posterity, Frazer’s book also has significant relevance for anyone that is interested not only in history but also in good storytelling. It is obvious that this book is full of well-done genealogical research, as well as personal nostalgia. After reading this literature, I myself was immediately interested in finding out more about my own family and history, being obvious this writing is a priceless gift for generations to come.

Frazer traces her family history from her immigrant ancestors into her lifetime. While keeping up with all the names and lineage of the family can be a bit difficult at times throughout the book, the stories she tells humanizes the characters you are reading about. Births and deaths, love and loss, and the ordinary and the extraordinary all grab the reader’s attention and make the characters come alive to us. This honest narrative touches on both the good and negative in the family history, adding legitimacy to the writing that would have been missing had the author not done so. With the right balance of research and family tradition, this tale is historically accurate and personal at the same time.

Centered on what started off as a small mining camp in West Virginia, the book is an interesting study on the history of the United States and the mining industry, particularly since it had such a major influence and drastic changes over the years. Weaving through the story, the reader can see the progress that occurred throughout the years; with the interesting twist that progress did not always have positive effects. As the years pass on and technology increases, we see the eventual decline of the town that the reader and her family so loved.

It’s hard to read this book and not sense the love and passion that was put into its pages by the author. The book memorializes a family history while educating the reader about what life was really like in those times. The writing style makes the book an easy read and gives readers insight into a world they can never personally experience. I would recommend this book to anyone, history buff or not, that enjoys great storytelling.

It was like reliving my childhood in West Virginia.......

Having gone to school with Sissy and having recently reunited after 50 years, I couldn't wait to read this book. I can't imagine all the hours of research it took to record her family history as she did. I enjoyed the entire story of her family but really loved the chapters beginning with the '50s, which encompassed our childhoods. I am so happy she was able to record this most important family history for those of us who grew up in that area of West Virginia..... If you grew up in a West Virginia coal camp, you will want to read this book. I could almost smell the old slate dump and hear the train whistle coming from the New River. Thank you,Sissy, for sharing your family with us.

If you were from or might share family history from an early West Virginia coal mining camp you'll probably enjoy this book. My "Dixon" family roots are from Minden and I grew up with the family in this book. Sissy, the author, certainly did her research and this book took me back to my childhood memories.
