Finally, the complete novel is available again!

A number of sellers are selling condensed or incomplete versions of The History of Sir Charles Grandison. As far as I know, there is only one complete version available - the 1647 page paperback published originally by Oxford University Press in 1986, and currently being reprinted in small quantities by arrangement with a publisher in New Zealand. I am currently writing this review on the page for that editon, although I notice that Amazon has posted reviews for other editions on this same page.

I have owned and read this particular complete edition and recommend it to all those who have the perseverance to read the complete 1640+ pages. Doing so will completely immerse you in the world of 18th century England and introduce you to its virtuous men and women (and the ideals of virtue) as well as its villains. Although we no longer adhere to the ethical standards of the 18th century, many people today are sadly lacking a moral center of gravity and can benefit by exposing themselves to the chivalric code of Sir Charles which so permeates this novel. While some readers will view the key characters in this novel as overly priggish, those who are drawn to fiction with admirable characters and an ethical perspective are likely to greatly appreciate this novel.

The complete Grandison novel is rambling, repetitious and at times tedious but there are some outstanding chapters and sections - book four was my favorite. It was Jane Austen's favorite novel, and in my opinion, is far superior to Richardson's Clarissa which is overly sadistic and melodramatic. Now if only it had been edited down to half its length, Richardson's Grandison might have earned a reputation as his magnum opus. But one way or another, reading Sir Charles Grandison is a major accomplishment, and one a reader is never likely to regret.

In this novel, Richardson presents the ideal male - the answer to what eighteenth century women and society (should) want. It is impossible not to be drawn to the character of Sir Charles and to root for the success of his affairs both worldly and personal.
Contains everything from world travel to duels, and presents all with gentle digs at the social conventions of a world that is, after all, not so different from our own.

I FINALLY FOUND IT

I nearly completed a digital version of this book that I found on Amazon years ago. Although it was the COMPLETE novel because it was a digital copy and this book is in the form of a series of letters, the formatting was not great so some portions were cut off and some were difficult to follow. That is why I am so happy to discover that they have an unabridged paperback (don't be tricked, it has to be the 1986 Oxford University Press version) available. Sure I had to pay almost triple of what a paperback cost today but it is so worth it to have the complete edition. I just started reading it again and let me tell you, it makes a difference in what format you read a book. I have heard that some books do not translate well into Kindle format, I think this would be one of those books. If you can find the version I mentioned above for a reasonable price then I would suggest buying it. To me, this story is almost the exact opposite of Clarissa. Clarissa just made me want to pull my hair out every time she had a discussion with her parents who were forcing her to marry a hideous man just so they could enhance the family fortune. Compared to Clarissa, Sir Charles Grandison is a light hearted version of a man who is nearly perfect but has to choose between two beauties. Oh to have such problems. If your bucket list consist of getting through Clarissa (considered the longest novel around), I would suggest you first read Sir Charles Grandison so you can get a feel for Samuel Richardson's style which at time can be repetitive but nevertheless compelling. I am so happy to have found a complete paperback version of this book for $40. Believe me, it is worth every penny since you will have hours and hours of endless reading so it is...pardon the word...a steal.

Segovia gleaned the most effective studies from Sor's extensive canon, compiling them into one album. Contrary to expectation, and common misconception, the album does not follow a graded progression; the album begins with Sor's polyphonic study Op. 6, No. 8, which corresponds to RCM (Royal Conservatory of Music) 7. Admittedly, the first few studies following the first are not exceedingly difficult, but before you decide to shell out your hard-earned cash, bear in mind that this album was never intended to be a beginner's introduction to Fernando Sor, as the easiest studies require an intermediate level of guitar proficiency roughly corresponding to RCM 5.

The studies are all eminently playable and exceptionally challenging. There's the finger killing study in barre, Op. 29, No. 13. The study in sixths, Op. 6, No. 9. The study in thirds, Op. 6, No. 6. Studies in arpeggios, legatos, chords, etc. All the most effective, and beautiful, studies written by Sor in one album. It's often stated, with good reason, that if you make it through this album unscathed, you can play anything.

The essential Sor studies are found here. The CD alone is worth the price.

Daily Exercises

An LP of John Williams playing the 20 Sor Studies was released in 1963. To the best of my knowledge, this is the only other complete recording of the 20 Segovia chosen studies. I bought the book and CD for the CD. Paul Henry plays them very well.

As part of my morning warm up, I have played one of these studies every day for 30 years. The purpose of these studies is to develop and retain technical expertise. I have found the value of these studies comes from their repetition. If you are working on them for the first time, don't try to `master' each one before moving on. Work slowly and take one at a time in their numeric sequence. You may never master all of these.

As almost all Classical guitar music, these are in standard notation so, if you play only from tablature it will be a problem. These studies added to a good Classical introduction book will get you started. Good luck.

Roman Administration

There really aren't many positive things to say about Andrew Lintott's book on Roman administration. The forward says this is an important addition to the study of administration in the Roman era. If this is true, we are all in a lot of trouble. Lintott tries to maintain an organizational structure to the book, but fails because he constantly veers from presenting his own specialized research to generalized themes. The result is a book that is awkward to read and awkward to study. My professor said it best: "Lintott claims to be writing this for his students. One wonders what they must think of him."
Lintott examines the effects of Roman administration in both the city and the province. I'm not going to waste much time discussing details here. There are too many of them and most of them are boring. In short, he looks at provincial administration, economics, etc. Lintott's conclusion is interesting. He feels that we shouldn't claim too much for the Roman Empire because it couldn't provide the kind of coherence that a city/state or constitution could. But Rome as a political and geographical expression lasted for 1500+ years. Who cares if it didn't provide city/state coherence? The economic and social links sufficed to hold Rome together. That should be enough.
Beware Lintott's writing style. It is so tedious due to misplaced clauses that you'll be ready to toss this one into the fireplace by the time you get to the end. I should probably lump this into the editing problems. For an academic text, the editing is atrocious. Mistakes abound everywhere. Lintott also drops so many Latin phrases, without explanation, that even Julius Caesar would have had trouble reading this. If you have to read this book for a class (as I did), take a deep breath before diving in.

Grade 5-7–A handsome presentation in a slender, oversized format, generously illustrated with impressive, informative acrylics. Strauss's clearly written text first introduces the concept of a family tree for all living things, then goes on to name the five kingdoms of scientific classification (those programmed for "Protists" will have to adapt to "Protoctista" here). On two-page spreads, the author describes the life-forms included in each species, with specific examples shown in the softly colorful illustrations accompanied by informative captions. The Animal Kingdom comprises the longest segment as it is broken down into invertebrates and vertebrates, with the latter divided still further into fish, birds, and so on. Two closing units discuss habitat loss and its effect on biodiversity, and how one can protect the environment. A final entry aimed at "Parents, Teachers and Guardians" explains the history of scientific classification, discusses the importance of biodiversity to this planet, and provides some suggestions for fostering a biodiversity ethic in young people. This book might be paired with Steve Jenkins's equally attractive Life on Earth (Houghton, 2002) to demonstrate just how biodiversity became such a rich, multilayered conglomeration. This useful, attractive, oversize volume uses its height well, employing a tree metaphor to show the earth's biodiversity and how all living things, from bacteria to the largest mammals, are related. Each spread covers one branch of the animal kingdom. To make the enormity of species understandable, Strauss equates individual species (e.g., 10,000 bacteria) with one leaf on the tree. Since only a couple of paragraphs are devoted to each species (a bit more information appears in captions), this is strictly an overview. But the eye-catching, painterly artwork, with various life-forms painted into the tree, invites children to look more closely than they might have otherwise. Concluding spreads consider the disappearance of some species and how readers can become stewards of the earth. A final two-page note, directed to parents and teachers, provides a more complex introduction to biodiversity. Ilene Cooper

You Can Remember That, Can't You?

The two most fundamental areas of study in modern biology are evolution and taxonomy. I will save a discussion of evolution for another day. But here we have Rochell Strauss's _Tree of Life: The Incredible Biodiversity of Life on Earth_ (2004), which deals with taxonomy-- the classification of living things. Now Strauss knows that _eventually_ taxonomy becomes legalistically complicated. But she also knows that _initially_ it is quite simple. Any kid can learn the basics. Hell, so can a lot of adults.

You've got this tree of life, see, and it's got five main branches or kingdoms: Monera (bacteria), Fungi (mushrooms, yeasts, lichens), Protocista (paramecia, ameobas, algae), Plants, and Animals. Plants are divided up between nonflowering and flowering. Animals are divided up between invertibrates and vertibrates. You can remember that, can't you?

And you can remember that we are vertibrates, can't you? Because we have backbones. And that there are only five kinds of vertibrates: fish, birds, reptiles, amphibians, and mammals. And that we are mammals, primates, and humans. That wasn't so hard, was it?

Strauss makes it especially easy by giving lots of colorful examples along the way. And there are also those lovely, giant paintings by Margot Thompson giving illustrations of living things that fall into all sorts of different categories. There are good sections on changes to the tree of life, some species at risk, becoming guardians of the tree of life, and notes to parents, teachers, and guardians.

Great for kids interested in natural life

A child’s introduction to biodiversity, this book creatively illustrates the richness and organization of life on earth. Kids learn about the five kingdoms and how all living things are classified in one of those. For those kids who are interested in natural life and are ready to learn more about the organization of it all, I’d definitely recommend this.

About the Author

Toshiyuki Shiozawa is Professor of Communication Engineering at Osaka University. He graduated from Osaka University in 1964, and received his Ph. D. in Communication Engineering from Osaka University in 1969. His fields of interest include electromagnetic theory, engineering-oriented relativistic electrodynamics, free-electron lasers, and bioelectromagnetics. He is an IEEE Fellow.
