as good as the first

Quicker read than the first but still good and gave a nice look into the Swedish boating world. I was very happy to see one of the female characters grow some gumption and stand up to an 18th century husband!! Not much development into the main protagonist male character though. The plot wasnt too difficult to figure out about half way in, but entertaining nonetheless and I enjoy the Swedish backdrop.

Viveca Sten captures the feel of summer in both of the first 2 Sandhamn mysteries. The season becomes an integral part of the story. Settings are brilliantly conveyed and characters neatly drawn. some plot twists are spottable .........but it's the journey that is enjoyable! Highly recommended - I look forward to the next!

Totally awesome, an exciting read. Sweden must be an exciting country and very beautiful. You get whisked there as you read this book, how great is that! And you don't have to leave your arm chair.
Viveca writes a very suspenseful loaded book. She has become a favorite of mine. I purchased the kindle version on pre release. The translation is perfect no mistakes and all grammar is correct YAY a joy to read.
Cannot wait until her next book is out.

Honestly, I didn't expect my San Diego State custom text to come up on Amazon, but since it is, I'll outline the edits. The book is used for a class that does NOT include any American cinema - I have also limited the chapters on 3rd world cinema and Asian cinema. I tried to reduce sections that were on films and filmmakers who you have never heard of and will never see. Is it biased? Yes, but I felt it was more important to show 8 1/2 than Blood of the Condor - sorry.

Too much of a good thing?

I've been teaching college film studies courses for about twenty years and I have been using Cook's book that whole time. It's an amazing effort which covers over a century of cinema from virtually every corner of the globe. Each edition has become larger and more exhaustive. So now we come to the fourth edition and I start to wonder when do we get TOO large and exhaustive?
The book is over 900 pages long. There are twenty-one chapters. Too much for a semester-length course - probably too much for two courses! I'd estimate there are ten thousand names (film titles and filmmakers). As an instructor, I look at it all and ask myself where do I even begin cutting to make it manageable for my classes? As a student, I'd guess you would ask, "how much of what I'm paying for am I going to actually read and learn about?" Seventy dollars isn't too bad compared to other college books of this length, but if you only read a third of it...?
A lot of film classes, sadly, my own included, tend to give you the greatest hits - the same fifty or so classics and nothing more. Cook rejects this and offers you literally hundreds of films that sound fascinating and make you want to see them. However, he seems so concerned not to exclude anything, that he name-drops. He'll devote a section of the book to films from a particular country and you get the impression, he's never seen them himself. He's just including them so the book won't be incomplete. There's no easy answer. He could ignore that country's cinema entirely and someone would criticize that decision. Instead he goes on and on about films you'll never see and won't be learning anything about.
I have a few personal criticisms of the new edition. Disney's animated films, he claims, are beyond the scope of the book, but then he discusses Japanese anime at some length. He has a section devoted to "splatter" exploitation films which includes pictures of a decapitated woman, a man with a drill going through his head and something really, really bloody coming out of ... well, you get the idea. If it were me, I'd cover Disney and skip the splatter section - or at least show fewer pictures. Am I just too old fashioned?
Cook has an especially difficult job with current world cinema. Like any other aspect of history, how do we really know what contemporary films are going to be classics fifty years from now and which will be forgotten? I agree with him some of the time: his detailed analysis of The Lord of the Rings trilogy. I disagree sometimes too: do you really think Moulin Rouge is going to be considered a "landmark" film even a decade from now?
Finally, a plea, not just to David Cook but to all cinema book authors: Stop including shot by shot break-down photos from classic films! Do you really think we need to see A DOZEN PAGES of the Odessa Steps sequence of Battleship Potemkin?!! Can we all agree that video now makes these films readily available to any film buff and certainly to any college offering a cinema class? There are SIXTY photos taken from Citizen Kane alone. I know it's supposed to be the greatest film ever made, but won't readers just go out and see it for themselves?
So for the film fan who wants an entire college-level education on world cinema in a single volume, I cannot recommend this edition highly enough. For a student choosing cinema as a major, or for their graduate studies, it's going to be a great resource. But I envision two other people who may be reading this book. One's a student standing in line at the campus bookstore overwhelmed and demoralized by the sheer size of the thing in the shopping cart. Real Ways To Manage Your Time

We all know that time in the 21st century has become a precious commodity, and figuring out how to manage it effectively is a challenge faced by anybody involved in the academic, professional and social spheres of today's frenzied society. Time management techniques are tackled by teachers, authors, and doctors worldwide, but nowhere are they presented in a fashion as realistic, practical, detailed, and well-laid out as in Dr. Jan Yager's book entitled WORK LESS, DO MORE: THE 14-DAY PRODUCTIVITY MAKEOVER. In a text filled with anecdotes, professional advice, and even etymology, Dr. Yager takes readers through a 14-day schedule with each day covering different topics related to time management. Her chapters cover actions such as planning, organizing, networking, and running effective meetings, technological duties such as phone calls and emails, as well as relationships both in and out of the workplace. Dr. Yager speaks to those of all professions, all financial levels, and all personalities.

Supremely Practical

Over the years, I have benefited a lot from productivity books, organization books, time management books. Each of them contained a few helpful techniques I was able to put into practice. Here's a volume, though, that is quite different. It's a workbook: it's made to mark-up and write in. It includes the whole range of things an efficient manager or any self-motivated worker should be doing. And it covers it all in a workable, down-to-earth, very readable fashion.

It's not just a book to read. It is a big (200+ pages) compendium of ideas, lists, quizzes, worksheets--a whole collection of absolutely practical material! And because it's just out, all its suggestions for using technology are right up-to-date. How to best handle the mountains of e-mail, how to make the phone your helper and not your enemy, strategies for backing-up your data--all these are covered in great fashion.

Need help with goal setting? Go to Day 2. Need to simplify your piles of paperwork? Check out Day 7. Having trouble with interruptions? That's in Day 10. Mired down with meetings? Day 13. Wondering if you could ever possibly get some balance in your life? It's Day 14.

This is anything but some boring textbook. It's a great read! It's interesting and supremely practical. If you want to stop wasting your time (and others' time, too), here's the one book to get. You'll be less stressed and way more productive.

Provides instant results

This book will save you time, right off the bat. I answer over 100 emails a day as a Project Manager on multi-million dollar projects. Page 54 alone is the worth the price of this book. Now I know how to categorize emails and respond appropriately depending on who sent the email.

I like the structure of this book. One chapter per day is bite sized chunks that readers can absorb and apply,one day at a time. (We are busy people which is why we are looking to learn how to work less and do more).

Jan has packed the book with logs and worksheets placed throughout the book to keep it interactive, with permission to photocopy the worksheets for personal use.

I agree that Self-esteem is the key factor in Time Management that is rarely addressed as Jan quotes on page 38. I would have liked to see more discussion on how to improve self-esteem, or at least a reference to a good book on improving self-esteem, as this is a key factor.

I would also like to have seen more focus on how to deal with the volume of meetings that Professionals deal with today. No-one in my office has a paper-based calendar like professionals had ten years ago. We have 6 hours of virtual meetings a day, mostly with team mates in other states and countries. Meetings are scheduled days and hours in advance. As such, it is not possible to see your meetings for the week, when you walk into the office on Monday morning. I would have like to have tips on the best ways to prioritize and attend meetings, beyond the appointment book on Page 76. Today's workplace is far more dynamic than a week-at-a-time calendar.

Page 50 has a nice tip on how to get motivated, that I have not seen before.

Overall, this is a wonderful book, jam-packed with tips and for employees, self-employed professionals and even students. Jan goes far beyond the simple "to-do" lists and her tips help all readers to prioritize better, make better decisions on where to invest time, so that we can have more time to do what is truly important to us.

I highly recommend this book and it has a special place on my bookshelf, so that I can reread it should my time get out of balance again.
