Social Inequality: Forms, Causes, and Consequences, Fourth Edition conveys to readers a complex and up-to-date view of social inequality in the United States in a way that informs, draws them in, and encourages them to look at the inequality surrounding them.

The book is based on the assumptions that social inequality is multidimensional and that in order to deal with inequality and its consequences we need to understand the theories behind it. Taking a historical and social structural approach, the author simply but compellingly gives a sense of the pervasiveness of social inequality and how it affects us all.

About the Author

Charles E. Hurst grew up on the ethnic south-side of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and his experiences there fostered a life-long interest in social inequality and social theory.  He earned his Bachelor of Science and Masters of Science degrees from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, and later his Ph.D. from the University of Connecticut.  He retired in 2008 as Professor of Sociology from The College of Wooster, after having taught courses on inequality in America and social theory for over 40 years.  His research resulted in articles on class consciousness, status inconsistency, and socioeconomic status and health care, and most recently, Amish society.  His books include The Anatomy of Social Inequality (C. V. Mosby 1979), Living Theory:  The Application of Classical Social Theory to Contemporary Life, 2nd edition (Allyn & Bacon 2005), and Social Inequality:  Forms, Causes and Consequences, 7th edition (Allyn & Bacon 2010).  During the last several years, his interest in social inequality led him to conduct research on issues related to women’s status, wealth, and class distinctions within the Ohio Amish community.  With a colleague, he has completed the first in-depth study of this settlement, soon to be published by Johns Hopkins University Press as An Amish Paradox:  Diversity and Change in the World’s Largest Amish Community.

2003 Inequality in the USA is an outrage

I think most U.S. citizens don't realize just how extensive inequality is in the world and in the U.S. Hurst does an amazing job of explaining this differential. In chapter eight he quotes the United Nations Human Development Report on worldwide inequality: "In 1997 it was estimated that the total wealth of the richest 225 people in the world was over $1 trillion, which equaled the combined income of the poorest 47 percent [of the world] (2.5 billion people)" (page 161).
He provides stunning at-home statistics as well. All well documented. All seemingly credible (U.S. Bureau of the Census).
He breaks social inequality along many dimensions, explains the general explanations for such inequality, shows the consequences of it, and explains how some have dealt with these perceived injustices in the past.
I think Charles Hurst's text stands as the backbone of any program that would truly work to change the status quo of the injustices of tremendous inequalities of all kinds.
Outrage was my reaction to the extensive detail this text brings to life. Be warned, if you open this book you won't like the picture of our world that it paints.

Dynamic Psychiatry Introductory Text

I was fortunate to receive a review copy of Psychiatry and have been reading it like a novel ever since. It is indeed "dynamic" making a dynamic understanding of the patient central to the clinician's assessment and evaluation. For trainees, and practitioners needing a refresher or introduction to the dynamic aspects of illness, this text is a treat. In this era of patient-centered care, wellness and recovery, Psychiatry offers hope that our field can embrace these principles and still be cutting edge.

Lovely Book! This was a perfect sequel to Twin Souls and I truly hope we will get to read a third book about Alex and Salem. There is a lot going on in this book aswell just like in Twin Souls but in this one I think it's more action. And I must say OMG to all of the crazy, sad and confusing things that Alex have to endure in this book. I would crumble instantly if I was her, gladly i'm not her lol. The only thing I do envy is her relaionship with Salem. He is so loving and understanding all of the time and Alex is everything to him. Alex relationship to her father Paul is kind of strained and weird at times, especially to the end of the story. Not to spoil anything but I really loved the turn Hybrid took towards the end of the book and it will be something to spin on in the third book (fingers crossed for that).

The story is so well written and you can really picture everything in your mind which I love!
Thanks to K.A. Poe for writing such a great story!

Love'd it!

Just as wonderful as the first, and I have a great intent to read them both again well I await the next. I found the book had a lot of unforeseen twist and turns that I found not only well thought out, but kept me anticipating the next page that much more. Amazing job K.A. Poe, you've written another amazing book!!

Beyond any fiction book out there

I have NEVER cried while reading a fictional story. EVER. This story made me cry a little. It wasnt becase it was especially sad it was just extremely powerful. The emotion that the author puts in the book is so raw and real... and...and magical that it will touch you deeply and have you doing what I did. When you read the last word you will roll off the couch and throw your Kindle while saying Holy Turd Holy Turd. Then you will start rolling across the living room carpet saying why why is it over and then you will come to the realization that THERES A THIRD BOOK!!!!!! You must read this book even if I think that it shouldnt be physically and morally possible to have so much action and awesomness in one single book.

Centered on what started off as a small mining camp in West Virginia, the book is an interesting study on the history of the United States and the mining industry, particularly since it had such a major influence and drastic changes over the years. Weaving through the story, the reader can see the progress that occurred throughout the years; with the interesting twist that progress did not always have positive effects. As the years pass on and technology increases, we see the eventual decline of the town that the reader and her family so loved.
It's hard to read this book and not sense the love and passion that was put into its pages by the author. The book memorializes a family history while educating the reader about what life was really like in those times. The writing style makes the book an easy read and gives readers insight into a world they can never personally experience. About the Author
The forties and fifties were the end of an era for many of the boom towns and little coal camps of West Virginia. This book portrays life as seen through the eyes of a youngster (Lillian) and her family. Lillian was the youngest of seven children. The book begins generations before the coal camp life and what eventually brought her family to Minden. It tells of the struggles they endured as immigrants, as miners and as coal camp kids, as well as the happiness and pride and joy of providing for family and the life they shared. After college and marriage, Lillian moved from the area. There are no miners among their family today. Most family members have moved for jobs and careers, with only a few remaining in the area. Lillian is now in her sixties. She lives with her family in the foothills of the beautiful Bull Run Mountains in Virginia. She has worked forty-plus years in the private industry, real estate, and the security industry. This writing was a challenge and new endeavor for Lillian as well as one of passion.

A Walk Through Minden: In the Lives of the Crone and Vegh Families transports the reader back in time as it followed the Crone and Vegh families when they came to America and settled in as a West Virginian coal mining family. A loving tribute for her family and posterity, Frazer’s book also has significant relevance for anyone that is interested not only in history but also in good storytelling. It is obvious that this book is full of well-done genealogical research, as well as personal nostalgia. After reading this literature, I myself was immediately interested in finding out more about my own family and history, being obvious this writing is a priceless gift for generations to come.

Frazer traces her family history from her immigrant ancestors into her lifetime. While keeping up with all the names and lineage of the family can be a bit difficult at times throughout the book, the stories she tells humanizes the characters you are reading about. Births and deaths, love and loss, and the ordinary and the extraordinary all grab the reader’s attention and make the characters come alive to us. This honest narrative touches on both the good and negative in the family history, adding legitimacy to the writing that would have been missing had the author not done so. With the right balance of research and family tradition, this tale is historically accurate and personal at the same time.

It was like reliving my childhood in West Virginia.......

Having gone to school with Sissy and having recently reunited after 50 years, I couldn't wait to read this book. I can't imagine all the hours of research it took to record her family history as she did. I enjoyed the entire story of her family but really loved the chapters beginning with the '50s, which encompassed our childhoods. I am so happy she was able to record this most important family history for those of us who grew up in that area of West Virginia..... If you grew up in a West Virginia coal camp, you will want to read this book. I could almost smell the old slate dump and hear the train whistle coming from the New River. Thank you,Sissy, for sharing your family with us.

My "Dixon" family roots are from Minden and I grew up with the family in this book. Sissy, the author, certainly did her research and this book took me back to my childhood memories.

Great book

I am 8 years old and love to play soccer. I thought the book was really good and it kept me occupied. I especially liked when Charlie, Joe, Bishop and Michael got to be on the Rovers team.
