Read this for a Glimpse of the Real Rock-n-Roll

It's too bad this excellent little book is so hard to find! It really gives you a true picture of what it was like to be a rock-n-roll star in the early 70's when rock was at its peak. Mott the Hoople were just "in the pocket." They were big enough stars to draw large crowds and be well recognized and respected, but they were never exactly superstars. They were the "blue collar" of rock-n-rollers and this book shows that very well. It also shows, in an unvarnished way, how a Briton viewed America back then, including some very poignant comments on the state of our race relations in this country. Ian Hunter isn't preachy, he just tells it the way he sees it. He is also a very literate writer. Having been in his mid-to-late 30's when he was touring, he was older than many other musicians at the time. Old enough, in fact, to have had a previous career as a print journalist which made his observations and translation to writing very good, indeed!

Simply the Best Rock Book Ever!

Ian Hunter proves himself to be one of the most articulate and intelligent personalities in rock in this diary of Mott's late '72 US tour in support of their All The Young Dudes album. It is a humble, egoless tale of the steps and stumbles of a band trying to break into the American market, lovingly and honestly told through the eyes of a young aspiring band leader. Refreshingly free of the self-cogradulatory tone of most autobiographies and the slathering praise of too many band books by fan-...-journalists, this modest (read: short) work starts and ends with the reader inside the day-to-day workings of a mid-level journeyman band, warts and all. Best of all (or, worst of all, depending upon your point of view), this isn't so much a book about Mott The Hoople and their music as it is a look at the human realities of what life on the road was like for the guys in the band, or most bands like them at that time. It captures perfectly the tone of the time and the atmosphere prevailing in the early '70's. It strips away the facades and breathes life into the rigors, rewards and frustrations of chasing the musical Holy Grail. I first bought this book in London in 1975, and have read and re-read it more times than I can remember. Raw, spontanious and unpretentious, it is funny, sad, touching and rewarding, especially with the hindsight of the band's history immediately after the end of the book. A must read for any music fan, and essential for any one who wishes to understand the period when the music became secondary to the business concerns. I love this book.

Calling a Spade a Spade

A slight but engaging snapshot of a time and situation: being in a struggling British journeyman rock band touring the States in the early 70s. The details concerning pretour pet care, bandmate flying phobia and pawnshop adventuring give us the real behind-the-scenes of life in a working rock band. So now we know what Hunter meant when he sang "It's a mighty long way down rock'n'roll". Some not very pc nomenclature may snap your head back once in a while, but it's an historical document of another time, another place, worth visiting for anyone interested in the rock'n'roll life.

Je me suis jeté dans les éclats comme on trébuche, corps chiffon, le ventre en décombres. Je tremblais. Jamais je n'avais tremblé comme ça. Ma jambe droite voulait s'enfuir, me quitter, une sauterelle apeurée dans les herbes d'été. Je l'ai plaquée à deux mains sur le sol. Elle saignait, ma jambe folle. Je n'avais rien senti. Je croyais que la blessure et le blessé ne faisaient qu'un. Qu'au moment de l'impact, la douleur hurlait son message. Mais c'est le sang qui m'a annoncé la mauvaise nouvelle. Ni le choc ni le mal, seulement mon jus poisseux. Mon pantalon était déchiré. Il fumait. Ma jambe élançait comme une rage de dent. Ma chemise était collée de sueur. J'avais pris mon sac, mais laissé ma veste dans la voiture de Marwan, mes papiers, mon argent, tout ce qui me restait. Je ne pensais pas qu'un char d'assaut pouvait ouvrir le feu sur un taxi.

Un losange rouge et un rond jaune étaient peints sur la tourelle. Figures familières de tableau d'écolier. Et aussi trois chiffres arabes au pochoir blanc. Marwan traversait la route, courbé en deux. Il marchait vers l'abri, un garage fracassé. Les murs étaient criblés d'éclats, noirs de suie. J'ai ouvert ma portière, couru bouche ouverte vers la ruine béante.

Chalandon nous bombarde de symboles et n' arrête pas de nous dérouter. On lit comme dans un état d ivresse complètement déboussolé. C'est pourtant un récit très réaliste avec par moments un style presque journalistique fait de détails précis, d'informations cohérentes. C est parfois poétique avec des descriptions balzaciennes la barbarie est pourtant décrite minutieusement elle remue notre âme et nous secoue, ébranle notre quiétude nous touche bien profondément. Avec sérénité et assurance on assiste avec conviction à la descente aux enfers de Georges. Comme un destin inéluctable résultat de toute guerre, de toute violence et de toute tragédie de toute incompréhension et de l'aveuglement de la surdité des conflits et de la violence. La guerre nous anéantis elle nous dépouille de notre humanité chalandon le peint avec talent.

About the Author

Nazmul Siddique is a lecturer in the School of Computing and Intelligent Systems at the University of Ulster. He has published over 120 scientific research papers in journals and conferences including seven book chapters and two books. He is a senior member of the IEEE and has been involved in organising many international conferences. He is on the editorial board of the International Journal of Neural Systems, International Journal of Automation and Control Engineering, Journal of Behavioural Robotics, and Engineering Letters.

Hojjat Adeli is the holder of Abba G. Lichtenstein Professorship at The Ohio State University (OSU). He is the Editor-in-Chief of three journals: Computer-Aided Civil and Infrastructure Engineering, Integrated Computer-Aided Engineering, and International Journal of Neural Systems. He has authored over 500 publications including 14 books and has won numerous awards. He is a Distinguished Member of ASCE, a Fellow of AAAS and IEEE. In April 2010 he was profiled as an engineering legend in the journal Leadership and Management in Engineering.

A book about Being

If you're looking for a how-to book, this ain't it! However, if you're looking for a book to contribute to and strengthen your own foundation for slaving, you'll be turning the right pages here. I found this book to be very helpful, surprisingly from both the Master and slave perspectives. (I'm a switch, have a slave (of two years) and am now looking to practice deep submission with a particular Sir.) This book gives a good foundation for BEING slave, rather than DOING slave, and it is my belief that effective and natural DOING must be preceeded by strong and confident BEING. It's refreshing to find a book that comes from this approach, even though there are enough tips and practical "how-to" in this read. It was also nice to read a book about slaving written by a slave, who understands the nuances and character of a slave mindset! (This, rather than being written by Masters or scholars who approach slaving from an outsider's perspective, which all too often seems to be the case.) SlaveCraft does not have all the answers (and, really, what book possibly could), and Baldwin acknowledges that its contents is a narrative drawn from personal experience and practices -- not universal -- with hopes that these will be helpful to others. Pat Califia's postlude gives a nice balance to the book as well, though I prefer the author's writing style easier to absorb on a gut level than Mr. Califa's more cerebral syntax (meaning no disrespect). On the whole, this book gives the reader -- both Master and slave alike -- plenty to consider and digest.

The first review is way off base

This book not only gives great insight with useful tools, it offers the reader the chance to re-think how they are approaching this lifestyle and whether they are approaching it with a 'true' heart ...
Mentorship is useful, but seriously there are a lot of bottoms, submissives and slaves that not only do not have the resourses to find a mentor, but they are too shy to go out and find one.
I would have given this book WAY more then 5 stars but that was the highest possible score.

Interesting but ulitimately unhelpful book

Several people suggested I read this book because they found it the best book about being a submissive, especially a service oriented one. While reading this book was interesting, I found almost nothing in it that would help me in my relationship with my mistress.

The goals and ideas Baldwin sets down are not ones that resonate with me. I read the whole book and felt frustrated that I wasn't getting what I wanted out of it. I didn't feel like I understood service submission any better than when I started the book.

Personally, I would suggest the two Miss Abernathy books. Epecially the work book which is full of exercises to do. I don't agree with everything she says, but I agree with most of it and I have found it extremely helpful.

A horrible accident in Montreal!

Sara Stanley is blamed for setting off fireworks in Avonlea when she didn't set them off and decides to sadly return to Montreal. Aunt Hetty goes with her and Sara is happily reunited with her father, Blair. But a horrible accident kills him and Sara is kidnapped for the inheritence money! Uncle Alec, Nanny Louisa and Aunt Hetty must return to Avonlea and find her before it's too late! This is based on an episode of the ROAD TO AVONLEA television series that spanned seven years and 91 episodes. These stories are very heartwarming and set at the turn of the century in the town of Avonlea on Prince Edward Island, Canada.
