About the Author

Andrea Biswas-Tortajada is a Research Fellow at the Third World Centre for Water Management in Mexico. She has also worked for the Water Supply Department in Gujarat, India and for the United Nations Development Programme in Geneva.

Asit K. Biswas is Distinguished Visiting Professor at the Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy, National University of Singapore. A recipient of the Stockholm Water Prize and named by Reuters as one of the top 10 water trailblazers of the world, his work has been translated into 37 languages.

The social and economic importance of coffee in Colombia is analyzed with a political economy perspective in this book. The Creating Shared Value concept implemented by Nestlé and allies, is presented in an applied way, allowing a better understanding of the scope and limitations of the concept in the context of "complexity" described for coffee guild in Colombia.

I like the way the authors make a comprehensive review of the issues on the agenda for the discussion of coffee production future, making important arguments to generate a serious debate on the challenges and decisions facing the coffee sector in Colombia to meet the needs of social change for the benefit of producers and the whole supply chain.

In this analysis, there is an interesting balance of tasks from coffee farmer level and the challenges to be business oriented and more productive, support services, the role of the market as well as the importance of long term public policies. The kind of actions needed for building social capital, for having a clearer approach to the concept of sustainable coffee and generate prosperity in a sector dominated by small producers, requires a high dose of innovation, policy decisions and foremost the ability to work collaboratively between stakeholder.

Young women poured into the workplace, but the "Help Wanted" ads were segregated by gender and the "Mad Men" office culture was rife with sexual stereotyping and discrimination. Lynn Povich was one of the lucky ones, landing a job at Newsweek, renowned for its cutting-edge coverage of civil rights and the "Swinging Sixties." Nora Ephron, Jane Bryant Quinn, Ellen Goodman, and Susan Brownmiller all started there as well. It was a top-notch job - for a girl - at an exciting place. But it was a dead end.

Women researchers sometimes became reporters, rarely writers, and never editors. Any aspiring female journalist was told, "If you want to be a writer, go somewhere else." On March 16, 1970, the day Newsweek published a cover story on the fledgling feminist movement entitled "Women in Revolt," forty-six Newsweek women charged the magazine with discrimination in hiring and promotion. It was the first female class action lawsuit - the first by women journalists - and it inspired other women in the media to quickly follow suit. Lynn Povich was one of the ringleaders.

In The Good Girls Revolt, she evocatively tells the story of this dramatic turning point through the lives of several participants. With warmth, humor, and perspective, she shows how personal experiences and cultural shifts led a group of well-mannered, largely apolitical women, raised in the 1940s and 1950s, to challenge their bosses - and what happened after they did. For many, filing the suit was a radicalizing act that empowered them to "find themselves" and fight back. Others lost their way amid opportunities, pressures, discouragements, and hostilities they weren't prepared to navigate. The Good Girls Revolt also explores why changes in the law didn't solve everything. Through the lives of young female journalists at Newsweek today, Lynn Povich shows what has - and hasn't - changed in the workplace.

When the Newsweek editors decided to write a cover story about feminism in March 1970, it was a hot topic, just the sort of current events coverage that the news magazine was known for. The day the issue hit the stands, a group of women who worked at Newsweek filed a civil rights suit against the magazine. Newsweek was being sued for gender discrimination.

Lynn Povich, one of the few women writers at Newsweek at the time, was one of forty-six women filing the suit, and she has gathered the documents and interviewed many of the people involved, on both sides, to ensure that the story isn't forgotten. The resulting book left me feeling both exhilarated at the progress they made in 1970 and beyond, and dismayed at the lost ground that will have to be fought over yet again.

The case was almost laughably open and shut, from a legal standpoint. Women with Ivy League degrees were hired at Newsweek as secretaries or researchers, and rarely rose above that. Men with similar degrees were hired as writers and went on to become correspondents and editors. Women who tried to become writers were discouraged or simply passed over. The few who did become writers were paid lower wages than men at the same level.

But the system was so entrenched that most of the women were reluctant to stir the pot. They were good girls.

While some of the management at Newsweek were surprised that the women won the suit, they shouldn't have been. On the other hand, it probably shouldn't have been a big surprise to the women that two years after having won the case, there were even fewer women writers and editors at Newsweek than before. They had to sue again.

Povich quotes Jane Bryant Quinn (who worked at Newsweek, but not at the time of the lawsuits) as saying "Equality is never given, it is taken."

The book opens and closes with the plight of several women working for Newsweek today who are astonished to find themselves facing obstacles such as the ones that were supposed to have been overcome forty years ago. They were unaware of the events of forty years ago. The Good Girls Revolt may have to be waged yet again.

A must-read for women in the workplace

My sons like to tease me and call me a feminist (yeah, they don't get it), a badge I proudly wear, so I was surprised that I knew nothing about the revolt by the women working at Newsweek magazine, who in 1970 brought a complaint to the EEOC against the magazine charging discrimination against them in hiring and promotion practices.

Lynn Povich, a writer who worked at Newsweek and was part of the suit, brings the story to life in The Good Girls Revolt: How the Women at Newsweek Sued Their Bosses and Changed the Workplace. The women were employed at the magazine as researchers, but were never promoted to writer or editor, even though they had similar education and experience as the men hired as researchers and quickly promoted to writer and editor.

Nora Ephron, who worked at the magazine, described the "caste system"
"For every man there was an inferior woman, for every writer there was a checker", said Nora Ephron. "They were the artists and we were the drones. But what is interesting is how institutionally sexist it was without necessarily being personally sexist. To me, it wasn't oppressive. They were going to try to sleep with you- and if you wanted to, you could. But no one was going to fire you for not sleeping with them."
Mad Men's Madison Avenue offices weren't the only places where sex and booze ruled the workplace.

Povich is an excellent writer, and parts of this book, especially where the women were secretly meeting and trying to recruit other women to join the suit, read like a tense spy novel. Will they get caught?

They hired a young and pregnant Eleanor Holmes Norton to represent them. "The editors, who had supported the struggle for civil rights, were completely baffled by this pregnant black woman who questioned their commitment to equality."

The male editors, some of whom seemed like great guys, just didn't get it. What was worse in many of the women's eyes, was that Katherine Graham, who owned The Washington Post and Newsweek, didn't get it either. There is a powerful scene where Graham meets with the women and appears baffled by their action.

Along with the historical context of this story, I enjoyed reading about the inner workings of the magazine. We had a subscription for many years, and I always turned to read Anna Quindlen's back page column first. I had no idea that the struggle for equality there was so recent.

I recognized so many names in this book- Qunidlen, Ephron, Eleanor Clift, Jane Bryant Quinn and Maureen Orth among them. But it is the names that I didn't know, they are the important names, the ones who laid it all on the line so that the above mentioned women would be well known. Women like Povich, Pat Lynden and Lucy Howard paved the way for the other women with this lawsuit.

This book is essential reading for all young women starting out in the workplace. They must know who fought the battles for them so that they have the opportunities now available to them. The women of Newsweek are heroes, and I think that this book would be perfect for a high school or college journalism curriculum. I was also lucky enough to meet Ms. Povich at this year's Book Expo America, a true honor.

So much progress, so much still to achieve.

I had the oddest feeling while reading this book that time both stands still even as it flees by. Povich starts the book with a vignette of three young professional women and their plight of career stagnation due to discrimination. Then she describes the stories of some of the principal complainants in the 1970 class action suit brought against `Newsweek' for sex discrimination. Povich outlines not just their professional stories but also some of their relevant personal history including their outlooks on life, their career goals, and their unique personalities. This makes the story personal and the reader can't help but root for their triumph. It seems so ludicrous from this distance to realize a lot of these women had Ivy league educations yet were stuck in the mail or research rooms of `Newsweek'. What a waste of an education, drive, and talent. They did win the suit but sadly, they had to continue to fight for what they'd supposedly won through the courts. An entrenched social system doesn't change overnight. Also, not everyone longs to be at the top, many are content with fulfilling jobs that allow time for a family life. The downside to the situation is the women who'd been exiled to fact checking for the male writers sometimes didn't aspire to be writers but felt compelled to try out for that slot after the suit and if they succeeded in becoming a writer they felt obligated to write `hard' news rather than arts and culture articles regardless of their interests. Worst of all few of the women who lodged the suit benefited personally from it. It was the women who came after them who were able to take advantage of the opportunities these women made possible. Povich walks us through the decades post-suit and what that meant for women.

One of the worst enemies for women then and now is the desire to be `nice', to be a team player, and to be thought well of. Women in positions of power are much more likely to be disliked than those in the typing pool. Worst of all finding a mentor is a challenge for women. Men can more easily find an older, more successful man to teach him the ropes, someone who will champion him and his career goals. Standing out or achieving recognition as a woman is seen as being pushy and rude. Not so for men especially if they have someone powerful to back them. It was then that I realized how relatively recent some of these changes were. And sadly the experiences of Jessica, Jesse, and Sara, the three women who sued for more job opportunities and less discrimination in 2010, still felt the sting of a culture that under estimates women and the family in general even today. This is a fascinating history of the workplace and I love how Povich informs on how both sexes benefited and/or were deprived of finding a work situation that best fit for them. So much progress, so much still to achieve.

Beautiful and striking collection of nature essays

Judging by the lack of reviews, it seems few people are reading this collection of essays. That's a shame. I've assigned it to a class to read as we discuss how our identities shape the way we see and interact with the environment. This collection gives voice to a lot of voiceless people and issues facing the U.S. and the globe. Each essay or poem here has a distinct style and perspective--those that are usually missing in conversations about environmentalism and what it means to live in harmony with the natural world. These essays challenge us to re-evaluate what the "normal" nature experience is like and force us to confront some ugly realities about the relationships between poverty, pollution, and people of color. Be advised there are two versions: one published in 2011 and the other published years before, and they are quite different. Beyond that, read this book if you enjoy nature writing or want some fresh perspectives on current environmentalism discussions.

This book cheapens nature. This might sound like an odd thing to say but I almost get the feeling that the writer abuses her relationship with nature and forces her views of it upon others in an off putting way. Stiff.

Short, sweet and to the point

There wasn't anything earth-shattering or life-altering about the methods described here, but I did find a couple of really helpful insights I can implement in my trading. For the price I paid for the book and the short time it took me to read it, it was good value for my investment.

This book had an odd stench to it. Typically I wouldn't complain, but the smell just seeped into the pages and was difficult to read. I had to air it out for a couple of days by an open window and that helped moderately. Otherwise I was happy with how fast it shipped and how useful it has been for the class I am taking currently. There were few highlights and marks in the book itself. I would shop from this vendor again.

I ordered this book for a senior level computer studies, business class. The book is precisely what you would expect: dry, hard to understand, and uses big words you have to google (assuming that you don't have precious computer intelligence experience, like me). It was unpleasant, but then again, it's a textbook, so what did I really expect?

Packt's conveyor is not slowing down: only three months ago I surveyed their fresh crop of "data science with R" offerings

"Mastering Machine Learning with R" by Lesmeister, £34.99
"R Data Analysis Cookbook" by Viswanathan and Viswanathan, £29.99
"Machine Learning with R Cookbook" by Yu-Wei, £30.99

and now there are four more:

"Unsupervised Learning with R" by Pacheco, £25.99
"Data Analysis with R" by Fischetti, £34.99
"Learning Predictive Analytics with R" by Mayor, £31.99
"Mastering Data Analysis with R" by Daroczi, £34.99

So far I have gone through the first two "new" titles, and had a peek at the other two. Pacheco's book is a clear "pass", Mayor's and Daroczi's look promising [UPD: I was wrong] - and finally, Fischetti's is ... a pleasant surprise, a rare careful, original book in Pack't sea of low-quality, low-value-added quickies. It is so nice to see an author (a) thinking about what he wants to present and (b) crafting his text - as opposed to walking through an oh-so-familiar checklist of machine-learning algorithms and regaling readers with half-competent, shallow digests of "theory" found in better books. Now, since this book, surprisingly, covers "proper" statistics, not the machine-learning algorithms, you may need a book on those - I would recommend "Introduction to Statistical Learning" by Witten et al. - but "Data Analysis with R" definitely gets my endorsement, as a friendly yet substantial introduction.

UPD. With the benefit of a little more life experience, I would say: don't spend your time on *any* R book. Python is the way to go.

Entertaining Introduction - Recommended

Based on co-worker's recommendation, I purchased Tony Fischetti's book "Data Analysis with R". I read most of it over the weekend and I can say it is an entertaining read.

Depending on one's approach to statistics, the book can be praised or criticized for being intentionally light on theory and heavy on practical application. In my opinion the world is full of heavy theoretical tomes, so I consider this assessment praise. That said, a background in calculus will make the integration discussion seem less like magic and more like the obvious application of mathematics that it is. I think the book is arguably aimed at CS majors, given how it is written and who published it, so I think assuming that most readers will have had at least some exposure to integral calculus is fine.

The book is full of graphics, which I like, and I appreciate that the author takes the time to tell the reader how to make these graphs, plots, etc. for him/her self. The code itself is also both informative and amusing. The book is published in black and white, and all the graphics look perfectly normal. However, the instructions included in the book would give you some really fun colored graphs if followed to the letter. Pink probability density functions? - Oh yeah!

I also enjoyed the well-constructed humor in the Exercises. I will use the exercises at the end of Chapter 3 to highlight his style of humor. Chapter 3 is about "describing relationships" between variables and includes correlation, etc. All perfectly logical things for the third chapter of a book on data analysis. Here are two of the exercises at the end of the chapter. One is normal. One is . . . not.

- Look at the documentation on cor with help("cor"). You can see, in addition to "pearson" and "spearman", there is an option for "kendall". Learn about Kendall's tau. Why, and under what conditions is it considered better than Spearman's rho?

- Gustave Flaubert is well understood to be a classist misogynist and this, of course, influenced how he developed the character of Emma Bovary. However, it is not uncommon for the readers to identify and empathize with her, and they are often devastated by trhe book's conclusion. In fact, translator Geoffrey Wall asserts that Emma dies in a pain that is exactly adjusted to the intensity of our preceding identification. How can the fact that some sympathize with Emma be reconciled with Flaubert's apparent intention? In your response, assume a post-structuralist approach to authorial intent.

Fortunately, I am married to an English major. I confess, I was drinking bourbon when I read this question and I nearly sprayed perfectly good bourbon all over an unsuspecting cat who was sitting in my lap at that moment. Fortunately, for the cat (and the book), I kept the bourbon in my mouth.

The book starts with ‘Refresher’ section which nicely explains the fundamentals of R . It helps clear the basics for the beginners like me, and provide a quick recap to people well-versed with it. As it progresses It deep dives into the application of advanced and effective analytic methodologies and shows how to apply those techniques to real-world data though with real-world examples. The last chapter gives an insight on how to put best practices into effect to make our job easier.

The contents of the book are well categorized and filled with many simple tips, tricks and small notes. Each chapter has engaging problems and exercises. The author also added humor into the book which makes it more interesting and entertaining. Each chapter ends with a comprehensive summary. The generous use of examples and illustrations in form of charts helped me grasp things faster. The author has taken efforts to show step-by-step resolution for his examples. However, disappointed to see goof-up with the page numbers, if possible resolve it quickly. Also, it would have been better had the author provided few pointers against the problems given in the exercises. That way it would have matched his view and the reader's view and ensured that the reader has understood the concepts completely or not.

To summarize, this book is for those who are looking out for actual implementation of different prediction techniques and not just theory about R. I would highly recommend this book to everyone who wants to work on R.

About the Author
Sidra Stone, Ph.D., is an internationally recognized author, teacher and psychotherapist. She has personally experienced six decades of dramatic changes in women's status in her various roles of professional woman, wife, mother, stepmother and grandmother. She is the co-creator, with her husband Hal Stone, of Voice Dialogue. Together, they have written five books, including the best-selling classic Embracing Ourselves.

Great book for women and men, too

Another great exploration of our many selves especially with relation to our feminine nature and all the "stories" we are brought up with about feminine and masculine.

Also check out Sidra and Hal's book "You Don't Have to Write a Book", a lesser known classic from these pioneers in learning about ALL our selves!

A Must-Read for Woman's Personal Liberation

In the early seventies I was a radical feminist and anti-war activist in the thick of every movement for change. I was militant about women's rights and loudly proclaimed "the personal to be political." Every night at dinner, however, I was completely puzzled that I wanted seconds but my husband was always full. I wasn't gaining weight so I actually thought I might have a tapeworm until I realized that like my mother and grandmother before me I automatically and unconsciously gave the biggest portion of everything "to the man." No wonder he was full and I was left wanting. I began then to have an inkling that in order to really alter the patriarchal system, something inside me would also have to change.
In The Shadow King: The Invisible Force That Holds Women Back, Dr. Sidra Stone reveals that patriarchy is an inside job, and that even the most emancipated women harbor an unconscious internalized "inner patriarch" who sees to it that we meet cultural expectations ! and makes us feel guilty and inadequate if we don't. We may be doctors, lawyers, politicians, entrepreneurs while still trying to be super wives and moms and, of course, push our way toward radiant health and spiritual fulfillment, but the inner patriarch thinks nothing of all that. He really doesn't think a woman can do much of anything on her own and wants her to stay home with a man so she will be safe and financially secure. He doesn't want her to take risks or rock the boat, and forget equal relationships with "sensitive men!" The inner patriarch demands that men be "real men," women be like their great grandmothers, and marriages last forever. If anything goes wrong with this plan, it's all the woman's fault.
With all this going on unconsciously inside our heads, it's no wonder that as more and more barriers to equality are lifted, we find ourselves somehow unable to take advantage of it all, afraid to go after big success, insecure about what we do achieve, and d! isappointed in our relationships with men. We put on the b! est show we can, but inside wonder "what's wrong with us?" The first step toward sanity and inner emancipation is becoming aware of the patriarch inside us.
In Dr. Stone's book you can experience the inner patriarch first-hand in fascinating excerpts of interviews with hundreds of women's inner patriarchs from around the world, done by using the Voice Dialogue method of working with inner selves which she and her husband, Dr. Hal Stone, created. Listen to the inner patriarch in other women and soon you'll hear your own. He makes a woman both ashamed of her femininity and ashamed not to be feminine. He belittles her accomplishments and thinks her talents are wasted on her - "it's too bad she's not a man."
Fortunately, just as we have seen changes in the outer patriarchy, it's possible to balance the power of the inner patriarch and learn to "employ him as a consultant." He's not all bad. He upholds traditions that nurture us as well as those that limit us. Unlike oth! er books which are all theory and no practice, The Shadow King gives women (men too!) very practical techniques and guidance for moving beyond duality, managing our energy fields, and creating real intimacy and partnership between women and men. Dr. Stone writes out of her psychotherapeutic work with selves as well as out of her experience as a daughter, wife, mother, grandmother, teaching us how to bring the inner patriarch out of the shadows of our unconscious where he drains us and makes us weak, and into the light of awareness and choice where we can use his power and assume his authority as our own.

Below you will find a (adjusted) letter I have sent to Oprah Winfrey about the Shadow King (december 97):
Dear Oprah,
I am a 25-years old, senior student Psychology, living in the Netherlands. The reason I write to you is I saw your show on 'Marriage Shock'. In this show I heard strong, selfdependent women tell how much they had changed after they got married. Much to their own surprise they suddenly felt the need to become the perfect wife, give up their jobs, their independence, and devote their lives to taking care of their husband. They found themselves changed in a way they just couldn't have imagined themselves before their marriage, even though, and that made is especially remarkable, there usually was no pressure of the husband to change in this way (they often didn't even like it!!).
I want to recommend a book to you that will definitely help you to understand these changes in women. It's 'The Shadow King: the invisible force that holds women back'. The subtitel is: 'ending the tyranny of the Inner Patriarch', and that is what this book is all about. We women (and men too, of course) are being raised in this patriarchal society, and although society is changing and emancipating, we all have internalized the norms and values of this old patriarchal system in our 'Inner Patriarch'. As long as we don't recognize this voice inside of us, we can fight for our independence and equal rights for men and women in society all the same, but we won't get out of the overpowering influence of the norms and values our own Inner Patriarch has for us. Through marriage, the Inner Patriarch is strongly activated, and that is the reason women suddenly change beyond their own understanding.
Recently I had a chance to experience this sudden urge to become Mrs. Perfect Wife, when I got married in october. Although my husband and I had been living together for eight years before that, I suddenly started to worry: Shouldn't I take better care of him? Shouldn't I be less dominant, more feminine, more homely, etcetera. But because I had read the Shadow King, I recognized this sudden urge and I could very well deal with it.
This book makes these mechanisms so very clear, so easy to understand and gives you a key to learning about yourself and staying your own person, even after marriage. But not only in marriage, in a lot of other ways the Inner Patriarch influences the lives of women, even the really strong independent among them. [For the readers of this review, I will give work as an example. I wanted to keep my letter to Oprah short, so I didn't write about this in the original letter. I almost have my degree in Psychology now, and I am thinking about getting a job. This is what the voice of my Inner Patriarch has to say about this: 'Okay, fine, you want to be a psychologist. But listen, you are a woman. So even after you have your degree: be modest, don't be loud. Never act as if you know better, especially when male psychologists are around. Don't go for further education because too much degrees makes women intimidating and manly, and you have to be feminine. Most important of all:... your children always come first! It's okay when your husband puts his work first, that's the way it is supposed to be, but for a women, things are different. You can work, as long as your husband and your children come first!'
Believe me, my Inner Patriarch is not an exception. To recognize this voice in you, will make you understand why deep, deep down you don't feel so emancipated and independent as you would like to be and as some people think you are... and understanding opens the door to handling it better!][The original letter to Oprah ends with:]
I will not get into all of the areas of influence of the Inner Patriarch. I will just recommend you to read this book: please, please, read it!!
The author is Sidra Stone, a very gifted psychologist. Together with her husband she has been studying the inner voices of people for over 12 years now, and together they wrote a number of very readable books about our Inner Selves: -Embracing Your Selves -Embracing Each Other -Embracing Your Inner Critic
