Sentimental and sweet

Through the eyes of a young bear, David Ezra Stein captures the bittersweet feelings of autumn. With the heart and vocabulary that a toddler will understand, the bear expresses wonder and concern for the falling leaves. It is a simple story, beautifully written and illustrated, that my 3 year old begs to hear over and over.

I Love this book, and wish I could give it a hundred stars. The illustrations capture the rich colors of autumn and the emotions of a new little bear who has never seen the leaves fall. Best of all it was so true to childhood and a little boy I once knew who wanted to put the leaves back on the trees and was joyful when he discovered that the leaves came back. To read this book is to experience the wonder of childhood the way a child does. Take a bow, David Ezra Stein.

Hooked - A Different Look into a Hooker's Battle with Addiction

Well, the first thing that needs to be said about this book is that despite it's title, which heavily implies the story is about one woman's life as a call girl, it is actually more about her drug addiction and messed up personal relationships. Her experiences as a call girl are just a fleeting side note to the bigger story of her cocaine addiction.

But the title "Hooked" is definitely still fitting. The story follows Katie, a woman who's life has spiraled out of control due to her serious abandonment issues and her crippling drug addiction. Like many addicts, Katie turns to cocaine and alcohol to try to numb the pain of her life. Unable to hold down a serious job, she turns to prostitution as an easy way to make money, even though she has a deep loathing of exchanging sex with random men for money.

Although the story itself is okay, the author's writing style is rough, amateur, and sometimes hard to follow. My biggest problem with the manner of storytelling was that the book is written almost entirely in dialogue, and the dialogue is often annoyingly repetitive. There are very few solidly descriptive paragraphs. It's hard to get a real feel for the story when the characters do nothing but talk in circles, and it's sometimes hard to discern which character is speaking, and who is saying what. And since this is a novel about a call girl in London, the dialogue often uses words and phrases that only make sense to people familiar with British slang and manner of speech.

If you prefer a story that is more about the sexual experiences and adventures of call girls, I would recommend Belle de Jour: Diary of an Unlikely Call Girl or Callgirl: Confessions of an Ivy League Lady of Pleasure. These books give a very different and more positive perspective on the life of a call girl.

Despite the issues I had with "Hooked", it is an interesting look into one woman's emotional and mental struggles with life and addiction. It may be a little rough around the edges, but it's still worth a read.

About the Author

David Gentilcore is professor of early modern history at the University of Leicester. He has written widely on the social and cultural history of Italy, from popular religion to the practices of medicine and healing. He is the author of Medical Charlatanism in Early Modern Italy, which was awarded the Jason A. Hannah Medal by the Royal Society of Canada.

The humble tomato has an intriguing history. For many its real history is unknown or irrespective. Italy is said to be THE tomato country. It forms the base of many key Italian dishes, after all yet the reality is quite different... Not so many people will acknowledge Mexico as being the origin of this red, shiny fruit (yes! fruit, technically a tomato is not a vegetable).
Here is an interesting studious, serious, light-hearted and detailed look at the humble tomato, its history and its positioning in society. It is really a mix of everything yet carefully corralled into a compelling read. Whilst technically a history of the tomato in Italy, the book is far from jingoistic or parochial.
Italians did not take immediately to the tomato, viewing it as a sceptical curio from the New World in the mid-1550s. It took a few hundred years before the tomato, or pomidoro, became more established. It wasn't plain sailing. Problems growing tomatoes didn't help. Nor did many toxic, inedible varieties lead to jubilation and endorsement. Many doctors at the time could not be described as poster children for fruit and vegetables - they actually railed against them for being poisonous and dangerous. Oh, how things have changed!
Over time this scepticism lapsed and Italians, Europeans and the world began to fall in love with the tomato. It is suspected that the author, too, is a lover of the tomato as their enthusiasm shines throughout the book. For such a detailed, learned book it is surprisingly easy-going and accessible. For the academically-minded there is a tremendous bibliography and index at the rear.
There is not a lot more to say. There is a fascinating story to read. An eye-opening sort of story if you let it. A little expensive for a general-interest book perhaps but it might still be a `cheap' source of entertainment and education if you utilise it to the full.

as good as the first

Quicker read than the first but still good and gave a nice look into the Swedish boating world. I was very happy to see one of the female characters grow some gumption and stand up to an 18th century husband!! Not much development into the main protagonist male character though. The plot wasnt too difficult to figure out about half way in, but entertaining nonetheless and I enjoy the Swedish backdrop.

Viveca Sten captures the feel of summer in both of the first 2 Sandhamn mysteries. The season becomes an integral part of the story. Settings are brilliantly conveyed and characters neatly drawn. some plot twists are spottable .........but it's the journey that is enjoyable! Highly recommended - I look forward to the next!

Totally awesome, an exciting read. Sweden must be an exciting country and very beautiful. You get whisked there as you read this book, how great is that! And you don't have to leave your arm chair.
Viveca writes a very suspenseful loaded book. She has become a favorite of mine. I purchased the kindle version on pre release. The translation is perfect no mistakes and all grammar is correct YAY a joy to read.
Cannot wait until her next book is out.

Honestly, I didn't expect my San Diego State custom text to come up on Amazon, but since it is, I'll outline the edits. The book is used for a class that does NOT include any American cinema - I have also limited the chapters on 3rd world cinema and Asian cinema. I tried to reduce sections that were on films and filmmakers who you have never heard of and will never see. Is it biased? Yes, but I felt it was more important to show 8 1/2 than Blood of the Condor - sorry.

Too much of a good thing?

I've been teaching college film studies courses for about twenty years and I have been using Cook's book that whole time. It's an amazing effort which covers over a century of cinema from virtually every corner of the globe. Each edition has become larger and more exhaustive. So now we come to the fourth edition and I start to wonder when do we get TOO large and exhaustive?
The book is over 900 pages long. There are twenty-one chapters. Too much for a semester-length course - probably too much for two courses! I'd estimate there are ten thousand names (film titles and filmmakers). As an instructor, I look at it all and ask myself where do I even begin cutting to make it manageable for my classes? As a student, I'd guess you would ask, "how much of what I'm paying for am I going to actually read and learn about?" Seventy dollars isn't too bad compared to other college books of this length, but if you only read a third of it...?
A lot of film classes, sadly, my own included, tend to give you the greatest hits - the same fifty or so classics and nothing more. Cook rejects this and offers you literally hundreds of films that sound fascinating and make you want to see them. However, he seems so concerned not to exclude anything, that he name-drops. He'll devote a section of the book to films from a particular country and you get the impression, he's never seen them himself. He's just including them so the book won't be incomplete. There's no easy answer. He could ignore that country's cinema entirely and someone would criticize that decision. Instead he goes on and on about films you'll never see and won't be learning anything about.
I have a few personal criticisms of the new edition. Disney's animated films, he claims, are beyond the scope of the book, but then he discusses Japanese anime at some length. He has a section devoted to "splatter" exploitation films which includes pictures of a decapitated woman, a man with a drill going through his head and something really, really bloody coming out of ... well, you get the idea. If it were me, I'd cover Disney and skip the splatter section - or at least show fewer pictures. Am I just too old fashioned?
Cook has an especially difficult job with current world cinema. Like any other aspect of history, how do we really know what contemporary films are going to be classics fifty years from now and which will be forgotten? I agree with him some of the time: his detailed analysis of The Lord of the Rings trilogy. I disagree sometimes too: do you really think Moulin Rouge is going to be considered a "landmark" film even a decade from now?
Finally, a plea, not just to David Cook but to all cinema book authors: Stop including shot by shot break-down photos from classic films! Do you really think we need to see A DOZEN PAGES of the Odessa Steps sequence of Battleship Potemkin?!! Can we all agree that video now makes these films readily available to any film buff and certainly to any college offering a cinema class? There are SIXTY photos taken from Citizen Kane alone. I know it's supposed to be the greatest film ever made, but won't readers just go out and see it for themselves?
So for the film fan who wants an entire college-level education on world cinema in a single volume, I cannot recommend this edition highly enough. For a student choosing cinema as a major, or for their graduate studies, it's going to be a great resource. But I envision two other people who may be reading this book. One's a student standing in line at the campus bookstore overwhelmed and demoralized by the sheer size of the thing in the shopping cart. The other is an instructor like me, who's wondering how I'm ever going to chop this opus down to something usable.
