Michael Trott is a symbolic computation and computer graphics expert. He holds a Ph.D. in theoretical physics and joined the R&D team at Wolfram Research in 1994, the creators of Mathematica. Since 1998, he has been leading the development of the Wolfram Functions Site http://functions.wolfram.com, which currently features more than 80,000 formulas and identities, and thousands of visualizations.

About the Author
Trott is a symbolic computation and computer graphics expert. He holds a Ph.D. in theoretical physics and joined the R&D team at Wolfram Research in 1994.

Prerequisites included make this a bargain and a gem

It is unfortunate that two recent Amazon reviewers have found it difficult to understand the programming style in this book. I am a retired mathematician, now an antiquarian bookseller. Over the last 14 months, I have been reading all four books in the GuideBooks set and am preparing detailed written reviews on their content for publication elsewhere. The Graphics volume, like volumes 3 and 4, assumes that the reader has read the first volume, Programming, the full text of which is available with this volume. Indeed, this is explicitly stated in Section 0.1.2 of the Introduction:

"The four volumes of the GuideBooks are basically independent, in the sense that readers familiar with Mathematica programming can read any of the other three volumes. But a solid working knowledge of the main topics discussed in The Mathematica GuideBook to Programming -- symbolic expressions, pure functions, rules and replacements, list manipulations -- is required for the Graphics, Numerics, and Symbolics volumes. ... The whole suite of graphical capabilities and all of the mathematical knowledge in Mathematica are accessed and applied through lists, patterns, rules, and pure functions, the material discussed in the Programming volume."

Mathematica's pure functional notation and nonprocedural programming and symbolic pattern-matching can appear quite cryptic, being difficult to understand without the detailed background provided in the Programming volume. This is not to slight the ability of people who have been programming in Mathematica for many years, for one can write procedural, pure function [nonprocedural], or object-oriented programs in this robust system. Fortunately, the Graphics volume comes with a DVD that includes the complete text of all four volumes in the 5029-page GuideBooks series, including an index and hyperlinks to references and material found in the other volumes. Once one has read the needed chapters of the Programming volume, reading and understanding the programs in this outstanding Graphics volume is quite straightforward.

A labor of love: Guidebook is a must have for Mathematica-using physicists

Imagine thumbing through a technical 1340 page book full of Mathematica graphics codes. If you are a Mathematica user, you would love going over this book. Michael Trott's The Mathematica Guidebook to Graphics is a treasure. He generously shared his labor of love with the ever growing Mathematica user community. Each chapter of the book is flooded with a wealth of references; he has clearly done his homework. The number of reference chapters runs well into the hundreds, some chapters have more than 800. Reviewing the references helps to compliment the unfamiliar concepts. The book also has an accompanying DVD. I personally have not used the DVD; I'd rather rehash the codes manually and try to understand them by trail and error. Essential comments explaining the reasoning behind using the commands for the majority of the codes are embedded in the codes. This book is properly called Guidebook; it is not a text book. Its target audience is a semi-advanced Mathematica user. However, interested beginners may well learn a lot going over the codes. Chapters also end with suggestive practice problems, some challenging, but nonetheless rewarding. Michael is a physicist with profound mathematical knowledge and skills. He has developed his own Mathematica coding style. As we all may agree, Mathematica is the natural glue joining physics and mathematics together; the playground is Mathematica and the players are physics and math. In my view, this book needs to be in every Mathematica-using physicist's personal library. I highly recommend the book, and applaud Michael for his enormous efforts in bringing the extended graphics features of Mathematica to the fore.

huzzah! at last a book that taught me why I got Mathematica

As an artist, I knew I was going to a raised eyebrow or two when I installed Mathematica on my computer. Math isn't art, the naysayers would chant.
Au contraire! And at last I have the book to prove it! Reading through normal Mathematica manuals gives you the briefest of cursory introductions to what the software can do in terms of graphics. Mr Trott's opus, however, was an answer to a prayer.
In excruciating detail he takes you step by step, teaching you how to develop the graphics that indeed show you that Math is Art! Page after page took my breath away, both at the complexity of the math involved and at the bauty that results.

My children love this book!

The pictures in this book are amazing and my children love this book. They have never once been scared by it. My 2 year old asks for this to be read 3-4 times daily. My children understand that the little girl in the book is imagining real characters instead of the trick-or-treaters coming to her door (which in the end it makes it quite clear that they are just children dressed up). This book is a hit and my children love the illustrations. They are not scared of owls, "real live dead people", ghosts, dinosaurs, or any other characters in the book. If you take your children trick-or-treating they see far scarier halloween cotumes and decorations in person. If you don't like Halloween, then don't buy this book.

Who Will Haunt My House On Halloween?

It is nearly Halloween, and I just got this book for my kids, ages 6 and 3. Both of them are really enjoying it and I've had repeated requests to please read it at bedtime. Neither have found it the least bit scary. In fact, one of the fun parts of the book has been finding the little mouse on every (or nearly every) page. Also, if you look closely, there is a hidden image of a Halloween cat with an arched back on every (or almost every) page. On the cover you can see it in the window of the house. The kids have enjoyed the hunt just as much as the story!

I AM READING THIS COMIC

I am reading this comic. It is full of gratuitous sex and violence. It is being deliberately bad and ugly. It is not flat out hilarious but it is pretty twisted and daring - the bad sex goes every which way, and loose. I am glad this comic exists. I am glad Benjamin Marra is a sneaky farker. This is the best worst comic I have read since his last one.This is my review finishing. I am content.

Not for the faint of heart, _Terror Assaulter_ is a 100% over-the-top tour de force, at once preposterous, gratuitous, ingenious, and hilarious, with often breathtaking (and lush, and jaw-droppingly violent) visuals. A tribute to and parody of Jack Kirby's Vietnam-era O.M.A.C. (One Man Army Corps), Ben Marra's book is the perfect holiday gift for your... a certain kind of person who would like this sort of thing. I cannot imagine the script to this thing:
NARRATION: Terror Assaulter chops off villain's head with sword.
DIALOGUE: "I am chopping off his head with my sword now!"
"He chopped off my head with a sword!"

But when was the last time a comix made me both laugh out loud and cringe in shock, AND think "Of course a child could do better" AND think think "No one can approach the genius of this comix!"

There's sex (or all sordid sorts) there's violence (of every sordid sort). Entertaining and offensive transgressive surreal madness here.

Much more readable and "in the trenches" than Volume One

After spending a volume dwelling on all the events that took place to at last produce the American and National Leagues as we know them today, Seymour uses the second volume to at focus on the players, profiling the great ones (Cobb, Walter Johnson, etc.) as well as giving interesting factoids about pennant races, teams, managers and players. I'm about half way through and it's been a much faster read than Volume One.

Keep in mind, though, that while these are rightfully acclaimed histories of The Game, if you are looking for detailed recollections on a particular pennant race, team, etc., you will need to look elsewhere. This volume covers 1903-1930 in 492 pages. In addition, if you're hoping to use footnotes or endnotes to do deeper research or just to check the source material, you're out of luck. There are none.

Like An Old Friend.

I had first read this book during the early 70's when I was Still in my teens,because nostilgia has a way of destorting things this book was not quite as great as I remembered it to be. Nevertheless it is still great a book, for those of us who understand that in History while Wars,Summit Meetings and the like have (and should ) thier place, so should the more ordinary aspects, of our cultural life. The portions of this book that deal with Ty Cobb's insanity and racism Hal Chase's corruption, "Judge Landis's" overated qualties, and the fact that the 1919 World Series scandal was merely a means to an end, rather than the actual cause of the overthrow of The National Commission, for me anyway make for great reading, I would urge anyone intrested in American culture, or just loves baseball/nostilgia to purchase this book here.

I have enjoyed the stories of the old timers

I have been a baseball fan since 1972. I recently became interested in early baseball history. This is the second book I read. Very comprehensive. I have enjoyed the stories of the old timers, and how baseball worked back in the day.
