Awesome Book!

What an awesome time with God as I was reminded of his great love and desire to be with us and impart impart himself to us through quiet times of waiting. I would recommend this book to anyone who wants more of God and needs a reminder of how good He is.

Soaking In God's Presence brings us into a closer relationship with God.

Soaking in God's Presence is one of the best books I've read. I am currently in a class and this is the book we are studying. At the end of each chapter we are soaking in God's Presence for 15 to 20 minutes and then either writing down our soaking experience and encounter with the Lord or sharing it with the class. It has brought us into a deeper and more intimate realtionship with God. During our soaking time some are delivered from limited beliefs and some are reporting that God actually solves their problems during their soaking time. Some are being healed of soul wounds they received even as children, such as abandonment, abuse, neglect, etc. During soaking we are getting refueled, refreshed, encouraged and equipped to continue to go out and perform our various ministry's with a new dedication and exhuberance. Soaking can brings us into and atmosphere of peace that stays with us all day long regardless of what chaos may be happening all around us.

He shows how, after the advent of talking movies in 1929, these men developed a new type of music that enhanced the images on the screen and intensified dramatic effect. Writing in language understandable to the lay reader yet sophisticated enough to hold the interest of the professional musician, he re-creates the powerful spells that many of the famous scenes in movies from Hollywood's Golden Age exerted on audiences and shows how mood was achieved by the brilliant interweaving of music and drama. An interesting look into the Golden Age of Hollywood.

Although, not a definite work about the great film music composers of the Golden Age (those are few and far between anyway) this one does have it's charms, particularly when the author is writing about one of his favorite artists. But the obvious disdain Palmer seems to have for Max Steiner, or that the great Victor Young is barely mentioned, prevents this book from being as useful as it could have been. Still, if you simply love the movies of the 30's and 40's then you will likely enjoy this. The point of view of the author is closely tied with how the music works in the picture, and the films that are usually mentioned as examples are those that many if not most film buffs will have seen.

A good reference

This is a nice, thorough handbook that gives just enough detail to allow you easily find something, and in each section lists plenty of references to dig deeper if you want.

The author seems to get the right balance between documenting everything and just pointing out things which may not be obvious or problem spots.

He has a nice format of how things are laid out; it makes sense and is easy to grab for quick lookup. As I am not a mathematician, I appreciate the glossary of math terms related to integration.

Please read carefully before giving to children

Please be very sure to read this book carefully before giving it to children. I have an older version of this book, edited by Sr. Mary Theola, that is wrought with modernist theological commentary.

She doesn't just tell the Bible stories, she tells children what to think about the stories (such as they are just stories and didn't literally happen that way). Here is an example of her writing regarding the creation of Adam and Eve:

"Here again we have the inspired writer telling us an interesting story about our first parents. We must keep in mind that the story is being told for a religious purpose and that it is most important that we understand correctly the truths this Biblical writer wants to teach us. In saying that God formed man from the dust of the earth, he does not mean that God actually molded a man's body out of clay. We can be fairly sure that the writer did not actually believe this. Neither did he believe that woman was really made from man's ribs..."

This commentary is the personal opinion of the auther and is pure conjecture. It is not the official teaching of the Catholic Church. Yet how is a child to know that this is just a theologian's personal opinion vs. the official teaching of the Church? After all, it says "Catholic" on it...

About the Author

Robert W. Kolb holds two Ph.D.’s from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (philosophy 1974, finance 1978) and has been a finance professor at five universities. He is currently a professor of finance at Loyola University Chicago, where he also holds the Considine Chair of Applied Ethics.

Kolb's recent writings include Futures, Options, and Swaps 5e , and Understanding Futures Markets 6e, both co-authored with James A. Overdahl. Recent edited volumes are: Lessons from the Financial Crisis: Causes, Consequences, and Our Economic Future, Sovereign Debt: From Safety to Default, and Financial Contagion: The Viral Threat to the Wealth of Nations, both published by Wiley. Kolb's most recent books are The Financial Crisis of Our Time (2011) and Too Much Is Not Enough: Incentives in Executive Compensation (2012), both published by Oxford University Press and both selected for the Financial Management Association's Survey and Synthesis Series.

Outstanding content, comprehensive, well-organized, well-written

I just finished reading "The Natural Gas Revolution: At the Pivot of the World's Energy Future," by Robert W. Kolb. Once I started it, I had a hard time putting it down. It's a masterpiece of scholarship and writing on a subject I have been eager to better understand. This is a must-read for the politician, investor, scientist, voter.

This book gives a great overview of the current state of the natural gas market. It explains in a very understandable manner all about fracking, horizontal drilling etc. A very good introduction to the so called natural gas revolution. You feel that it is a very objective description of the subject.

It also provides useful economic data, both national and worldwide. I would recommend it to anyone looking to understand the future of natural gas and fracking.

Lost Adventures of Sherlock Holmes: Find This Book

If you enjoyed the classic Sherlock Holmes film series starring Basil Rathbone and Nigel Bruce as the original dynamic duo, you will enjoy this great collection of short stories adapted from the original radio plays produced in the 1940's.

Well-illustrated with drawings based on Rathbone and Bruce, the author delves into the so-called "lost adventures" of the great detective covering his exploits in the late 19th Century. While this book's Watson is distinctly different from Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's original character, the book is nevertheless an enjoyable addition to any Holmes fan's library.

Plus, if you enjoy this book, try to find the audio CD called "The Unfortunate Tobacconist," which features this same collection of stories as the original radio plays performed by Rathbone and Bruce.

Fun Stories For Fans of Old Radio and Holmes

There never has been anything quite like old-time radio in America. It was pure magic. It was adventure and drama, mystery and suspense, drifting through the night air into homes lit only by the orange glow of tubes warming up. Families gathered around the radio, carried away by their imaginations.

Author Ken Greenwald was one of those listeners, and one of his favorite shows growing up was Sherlock Holmes. For most of us, Basil Rathbone and Nigel Bruce will always be Holmes and Watson. The films and radio shows are still watched on late night TV and listened to by old-time radio buffs like myself.

When radio archivist Ken Greenwald and a small group of friends discovered a long list of missing radio shows from 1945, written by great radio writers Dennis Green and Anthony Boucher, the idea of turning their original radio scripts into short stories was born. Greenwald has done a marvelous job of blending the two distinct mediums together.

You can easily picture Rathbone and Bruce in these fun adventures as Greenwald has kept the fast pace of the radio plays while fleshing them out a bit and adding the transitions necessary for the short story form. Greenwald gives us a baker's dozen here. My personal favorites are "The Adventures of the Headless Monk" and "The Adventure of the Iron Box." The former is filled with the atmosphere of the foggy moors and a dash of the supernatural, making this one a lot of fun. In the latter, Holmes hatches a clever scheme to solve a mystery shortly after the Christmas rush that will include, of all people, Sir Walter Scott!

How did Sherlock Holmes first meet Moriarity? Why in the world did Holmes buy that Sussex bee farm? Telling you which stories you'll find the answers to these questions would only ruin the fun. Enjoy!

"It shall always be Sherlock Holmes and Victorian England"

This is a very enjoyable collection of stories based on scripts from the original radio plays.
Basil Rathbone was a "softer" version of Holmes. The original Sherlock could be hard and unfeeling - a machine as Watson often describes him.
That probably didn't play to audiences so, by comparison, Rathbone is just mildly eccentric. He's far more tolerant of the inability of Watson and others to keep up with him than is the original Sherlock.
It's a little as if someone had found the dichotomy betwen Hamlet's magnificent spirit and his fatal flaw disconcerting and had rewritten Shakespeare's classic to make Hamlet just a typical troubled young adult struggling with newfound freedom and responsibilties.
And Nigel Bruce's bumbling Watson is largely comic relief and equally unlike the original Conan Doyle version.
But at least the original radio playwrights kept the two heroes in late 19th century/early 20th century England. I think that most of the movies that Rathbone and Bruce made were set during World War II. I mean, no one could be a worthier contender against the Nazis than Sherlock Holmes, but still...
The story of how Holmes and Watson first meet Moriarty is unconvincing, as is the portrayal of Moriarty, and equally unconvincing is how, in "The April Fool's Adventure", Holmes finds all of the clues that the pranksters leave for him to find but doesn't see how they were intended to point to himself as the culprit. His inability to recognize himself is bewildering, and he must have forgotten to use his magnifying glass to look at the calendar.
But so what? When a classic is changed for mass market effect, the result is often disastrous, but not so here.
The bottom line is that all of the stories are very enjoyable. For all of the merit of the original Conan Doyle classics, they were written as a disagreeable chore to satisfy the public's demand for a character that Conan Doyle himself had quickly grown tired of.
These stories were crafted with a lot of love and care, and that might be why the two main characters themselves draw more affection than do the original versions.
Our debt to Conan Doyle for bringing us Sherlock Holmes is incalculable, but equally incalculable is our debt to his contemporaries for forcing the author to resurrect the great detective from (what we were led to believe was) the bottom of Reichenbach Falls. Perhaps the public also deserves credit for rescuing Holmes's humanity as well as his life from the clutches of his original creator, and perhaps this kinder, gentler Holmes is an example of this second rescue effort.
And speaking of Holmes's life, the last story in this collection provides a plausible explanation (entirely consistent with the Conan Doyle concordance) of why Sherlock Holmes cannot die. Literally. That's worth the price of admission, in and of itself.

entertaining reading = 5, theoretical plausibility = 1

Although Bergler is a psychiatrist, he disagrees with Freud's explanation of male homosexuality. Bergler contends that a baby regards his mother as a witch who is trying to kill him. When the mother feeds the baby milk, the baby thinks she is trying to choke him. When the mother bathes the baby, the baby thinks she is trying to drown him. If a boy becomes fixated on this stage, homosexuality results.
Bergler has a brief explanation of female homosexuality, but I didn't understand it.

AN EARLY CLAIM THAT PSYCHOANALYTIC TREATMENT CAN BE A "CURE"

Bergler wrote in the Foreword to this 1956 book, "The statement that psychoanalytically oriented psychiatry can cure male homosexuality and Lesbianism could not have been made a decade ago. At that time, a sterile pessimism on this score pervaded the science... today, psychiatric-psychoanalytic treatment can cure homosexuality... It is granted that heterosexuality per se does not guarantee emotional health... But there also exist healthy heterosexuals, and there are no healthy homosexuals... All this can be remedied by information combined with treatment, provided the prospective patient really wants to change."

For Bergler, "homosexuality is a neurotic disease." (Pg. 13) He adds, "Homosexuals display an amount of irrational and violent jealousy unparalleled in heterosexual relationships." (Pg. 25) Homosexuality is "an unconscious search for a duplicate of oneself as a boy." (Pg. 64) He asserts, "At times, the homosexual's externally visible narcissism reaches really megalomaniacal proportions." (Pg. 163)

He argues, "I make the positive statement that homosexuality has an excellent prognosis in psychiatric-psychoanalytic treatment of one to two years' duration, with a minimum of three appointments each week---provided the patient really wishes to change." (Pg. 176) He adds, "a `therapeutically usable' portion of the guilt must be present, or must be therapeutically retrievable, if the specific homosexual is to be a suitable candidate for recovery." (Pg. 179)

Bergler's pronouncements seem astoundingly "dated," even given that they are nearly sixty years old. But they can be interesting reading for one studying the historical background of psychoanalytical appraisals of the subject.

Awful garbage from the Stone Age

Prior to the removal of homosexuality from the official list of mental illnesses in 1973, it was quite common for psychiatrists to write toxic drivel like this, combining bizarre theories with fire-breathing homophobia. Bergler was the very worst of a bad lot. It is impossible to read this rubbish without seeing how extremely hostile Bergler was to gay people. Gore Vidal opined that these shrinks had been raised by mothers who wanted them to become clergymen, so they took a moralistic mentality with them into the field of "medicine."
