Those Devils in Baggy Pants (My Dad was one of those devils)

I was just goofing around tonite on my computer and was thinking of my dad, (Thomas Leccese) who passed away 3-18-80 at the age of 62. I punched in author William Breuer who contacted me several years ago in search of my dad. Mr.Breuer was writing several war books and was conversing with Ret.General William Gavin of the 82nd Airborne (504th) who gave Mr. Breuer my dad's name. It was and still is quite amazing to me that General Gavin remembered my dad after 50 years and thousands of paratroopers he met. I suppose he remembered my dad's name because of the odd circumstances. My dad was guarding the General and took a bullet in the arm which was meant for General Gavin, the bullet was made of wood which apparently made it memorable for the General. When my brothers and I were young we use to play with the hole in dad's arm which was situated between all the tatoos which listed all dad's battle jumps (he jumped in all the major battles). It was pretty cool. The only other thing that was more cool was watching dad's legs jump while he was sleeping but this event only happened when the weather was damp. Mom informed us that dad got shot too many times in the legs during the war. I believe he had a purple heart with three clusters as well as silver star, bronze star and was actually up for the distinguished service star but his 11 court marshalls took care of that. The story was that dad did not like to salute officers and just liked to punch people who [ticked] him off.
But anyways, I saw "The devils in Baggy Pants" come on the screen by Ross S>.Carter which I have in paperback (it was my dads copyright 1951)Actually I opened up the book and found some photos of my dad getting on a plane ready for battle as well as dad at the hospital with his left arm bandaged (yep, wooden bullet wound). I am very exited to see the book is out in hard cover and I will go get one tomorrow.
Dad is in the book in chapter 37." Six Men On a Suicide Stand" page 152, briefly.
I remember dad telling me the book was surprisingly very accurate and the names were correct but the author had some of the men mixed-up with the tasks but did a great job with the facts.
Other books dad was in were; "They jumped at Midnight" and "Drop Zone Sicily" both by William Breuer a couple neat stories about dad.
I recall William Breuer asking me to let him borrow my dad's war photos (which I have a few of) but my mom would not hear of it. Mr. Breuer stated he would hand carry them and bring them back but mom did not know what to do so it did not happen. I feel badly now we did not let Mr. Breuer take the photos, I am certain they would have been returned in perfect condition. Well maybe someone will be looking for the photos the next book. I do have one great photo with dad and two more paratroopers standing in front of a plane in full gear. It appears they are getting ready to board the plane. Dad told me they did not get on the plane in the photo due to it was full. The plane was shot down shortly after and all paratroopers died. Dad and his buddies got on the next plane.
I do not want to get carried away about dad. I only know what I have read in some of the war books and I did read dad's diary when he was in the 82nd as well as some of the stories told by dad's brothers. Dad was a very quiet man and would talk about the war if someone asked him but rarely brought it up on his own. My cousin did write a book and interviewed dad in detail of his war experiences but I never saw the book if it was published.
I always thought the book was "5 STAR" but I'm prejudice.
It is nice to see some other people feel the same.
One quick story.. My good friend Ralph who was a green beret in Vietnam came home after several tours and a few body parts missing came to my house and kissed my dad and stated he idolized 82nd Airborne 504th (WWII).Ralph stated in his opinion they were the best...
I respect all the men who fought in all the battles equally. My family fought in the army, navy, and marines.
So, according to dad the book is right on the money...

They died for you. Do you remember?

I have read upwards of twenty book about W W I I. This ranks at the top of all lists. I read it at age 17 and was overwhelmed. I read it at age 62 and was overwhelmed.
This is a first hand account of a paratroop division that fought the Nazis for two years, sometimes going for several weeks under fire without beds, warm food, clean clothes or water to bathe in. The hardships are stated simply and frankly without embellishment and they are chilling. The sudden death, the casual and astonishing acts of bravery and the mass murder of war are all presented the same way. And yet there is literature.
The author never speaks of his own conduct in war, he only observes. Fewer than half a dozen men he started out with came back alive. He died of cancer shortly after finishing this book. One of the survivors of his unit visited his grave with the author's brother and said, "The bravest man I ever knew is buried on that hill."
This is as close as you can come to understanding war without being there. The feats of the common men that Ross Carter served with are feats one would only expect of a superman. They laughed about it, lived with it and died with it. The book compares with "All Quiet on the Western Front" by Remarque, with "To Hell and Back", by Murphy and with "Her Privates, We", by Manning.

Wish there would have been a better description. There is an eTextbook for this book; it is available through Pearson's website. Unfortunately, the textbook from amazon did not include the eTextbook or other online resources. The access code sold alone with the eTextbook is $156.20 on the Pearson website. Hope this helps someone!

It looks like a great textbook, though. Solid. Wish that there was an easy PDF form that came with the amazon purchase, though!

Refreshing yet informative

Even though I do know my biology well, this book offers other perspectives and is backed up by experimental data as well. Its vivid and well placed illustrations helped me to refresh my concepts and though it is a little on the thicker side, I recommend this book for a strong foundation in biochemistry. Even for those who are "seasoned" in Biology, this book does stretch your understanding further and you will definitely get fresh insights.

Being a biochemistry major I found this book to be one the best books out there. Very easy to follow and makes the material easier to read and understand. The illustrations and diagrams in the book are some of the best ive come across. I recommend this text book over any text book out there for other college students. Im keeping mine even after I graduate just to have in the future for a point of reference

About the Author

Spencer E. Cahill (1949-2006) was Professor of Sociology at the University of South Florida. The author or editor of four books and numerous articles, he was also editor of Social Psychology Quarterly; associate editor of Symbolic Interaction; and president of the Society for the Study of Symbolic Interaction.

Kent Sandstrom is Professor of Sociology and Dean of the College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences at North Dakota State University. The recipient of numerous teaching and research awards, he is the co-editor of the Journal of Contemporary Ethnography and author of several books, including Symbols, Selves, and Social Reality, Fourth Edition (OUP, 2013).

Carissa Froyum is Associate Professor of Sociology at the University of Northern Iowa. She is deputy editor of the Journal of Contemporary Ethnography and recipient of the 2011 University Book and Supply Outstanding Teaching Award.

C++: An Introduction to Data Structures, by Larry Nyhoff, is an undergraduate course text on data structures and associated algorithms as expressed in the C++ language.It is an extraordinary textbook forming an excellent introduction to the discipline of programming.

Writing textbooks is much harder than writing general computing books. While authors writing for general publication can cater to their own tastes, textbook authors must strive for both orthogonality and breadth, knowing the reader's exposure to the matters under discussion may be limited for years to those encountered in the textbook. At the same time, the presentation must make the topics memorable.

Nyhoff, of the Calvin College Department of computer science (Grand Rapids, Michigan), succeeds in satisfying these goals. The presentation is both rich and well targeted to undergraduates. It is written in a style surprisingly engaging even for the expert. This is the clearly one of the best volumes of its genre.

The book is about data structures in the classic sense: Nyhoff might have titled the book Algorithms + Data Structures = Programs if Niklaus Wirth hadn't already used the title in the 1960s. This text is designed for the course CS2 as described in the curriculum recommendations of the ACM (Association of Computing Machinery). It aims to meet the major objectives of this course as spelled out in these recommendations, one of which is: To continue developing a disciplined approach to the design, coding, and testing of programs written in a high-level language. This text continues the Object-Centered-Design paradigm developed in the C++ text of which I am one of the authors-C++: An Introduction to Computing-and culminates in true OOP (Object-Oriented Programming), which has become the modus operandi in programming and system development. It also continues the coverage of C++, including more advanced topics not usually covered in a first course and that students need to learn such as recursion, function and class templates, inheritance, and polymorphism. Standard C++ as prescribed in the final November 1997 ANSI/ISO draft is used throughout.

Two other objectives of CS2 are: To teach the use of data abstraction using as examples data structures other than those normally provided as basic types in current programming languages; for example, linked lists, stacks, queues, and trees. To provide an understanding of the different implementations of these data structures. This text emphasizes abstract data types (ADTs) throughout. It is a study of data structures in the spirit of OOP. All of the usual data structures are covered as recommended. It also treats the containers and algorithms from the Standard Template Library, which are up-to-date and powerful standard data types and tools in C++. In addition, some of the C-style topics appropriate in a data structures course are included, because many students will get jobs as C programmers; many libraries are written in C; C-style data structures are usually implemented very efficiently; and they are often used to implement some of the more modern standard data types.

To introduce searching and sorting algorithms and their analysis. Both searching and sorting are covered in detail in the text. It also covers algorithm development, analysis, and introduces algorithm verification, thus providing a first look at important tools for later courses in computer science. The curriculum recommendations also include the following objective for the CS2 course: To provide an introduction to the various areas of computer science and thereby provide a foundation for further studies in computer science. This text continues the portrayal of the discipline of computer science begun in C++: An Introduction to Computing by including examples and exercises from different areas of computer science in an attempt to provide a foundation for further study in theoretical and/or applied computer science. The topics include:

A description of the software development process. Abstract data types Object-oriented programming Computational complexity of algorithms, illustrated by the analysis of standard searching and sorting algorithms An introduction to correctness proofs Data encryption schemes (DES and public key) Data compression using Huffman codes Doubly-linked lists and large integer arithmetic Random number generation and simulation Lexical analysis and parsing Reverse Polish notation and generation of machine code Simple systems concepts such as input/output buffers, parameter-passing mechanisms, address translation, and memory management SUPPLEMENTARY MATERIALS
A number of supplementary materials have been planned for this text: A solutions manual containing solutions to all of the exercises and many of the programming problems (available from the publisher to instructors who adopt the text for use in a course) A companion website (prenhall/nyhoff) containing presentation slides, source code, and additional resources. Best Intro to ANSI C++ and Datastructures with STL so far

I am teaching the second programming / first data structure course in the department of electrical and computer engineering.
This book is very good for students who already know how to program in C or C++. My students learn C part of C++ in the first programming course. This book covers object oriented programming part of C++. Then it follows into data structures. It starts with its own definitions of stack and queue and then migrates to the standard template library (STL). Everything is kept on the undergraduate student level. All other STL books I know assume that you are already an expert in programming or at lest for students after two programming courses, and are too difficult for average non-CS students.
My only complain is that pointers are introduced very late in the text. Some students complain that there is not enough examples, while others complain that the book is overexplanatory. My solution to the first problem is providing a set of complete compilable examples on the course Web site. I refer the latter group of students to the programming encyclopedia books for more details.
Ordinarily I would rate this text as four star only. Since it is the only introductory text that both introduces OOP and covers STL, it gets five stars from me.

Great book for introducing Data Structures

I bought this book as additional reference for my Data Structures course.

Pros:

The book covers MANY topics.

Basic data structures such as stacks, queues, lists and trees (avl, binary, nary) are well developed.

ADTs have nice explanations that give a basic insight on designing and implementing them.

Great as an introduction to Data Structures with some depth.

Cons:

Very few code. Most examples don't include any code, which is a crucial part in understanding concepts at times.

Graphs seem to be unimportant to Nyhoff, since his coverage of the subject is scarce (or none?).

The complexities chapter and ADT analysis seemed too shallow. The examples are extremely simple and complexity analysis for recursive or more complex algorithms is not good.

Bottom line: as the title implies, an excellent book for introducing data structures. Lots of subjects are covered. If you need something more advanced, buy something else. Drozdek's Data Structures and Algorithms in C++ is worth checking out.

good lessons easy to follow

I am an independent software engineer; I got this book to help me in my development of software it is the best book I have on this subject. If I have a problem, this book gives me the information I need to solve the problem. Granted this is not a book for the person who wants Her/His hand held and this book does not spoon-feed you like the HOW TO books but that person who truly wants to learn and is willing to put in a little effort to learn, not much but a little C++ An Introduction To Data Structures is the book for you.
If you really want to learn Data Structures and how to correctly use them grab this book and you will learn more then you thought you would.
